There you see!
Bobby was a better pure Scrum Half - Long possibly a better player but that wasn't the question - or was it - I forget now......

I'd agree with that. Goulding was a better all round scrum half than Long IMO but what Long has done in the 7 shirt for Saints dwarfes Gouldings achievements. We can't forget that Bobbie lead us to our first championship in 20 odd years but Long has continued that success and shown far more dedication to the club than Goulding ever did.
I also agree twith the point RE: Martyn/Pryce. It's a gnat's whisker between the pair of them for me and if Pryce stays fit and ends his career at Saints then I would imagine he'll overtake Martyn in years to come.

Prescott was, for me, an absolute pleasure to watch. There aren't many guys that made the entry money worth while as easiliy as he did.
As for anyone who doubt tommy Martyn's entry - there's been plenty of times were he's carried a lot of weight on his shoulders (including underperforming half back partners) and when he was fit and firing, we swept all before for us.

| The thing about Tommy Martyn is that he was a great great player for the Saints, but what made everyone love him so much was his character as much as his rugby brain.
Would Pryce ever mischievously kick a spare ball further onto the pitch to put the opposition off at a tap penalty? Or more to the point, would he get interviewed after the game with a big silly grin on his face and claim it was the foot of God? For me it's stuff like this and his obvious love of the game that will leave Tommy tattooed on my rugby memory for ever. Pryce will probably go on to be more successful in his career and win far more medals with the Saints but people will never talk about him with the same warmth and affection as they do about Tommy.

Utter nonsense chappie.
I'd take Gardner over all those except Sullivan (only due to pace) and Albert.

Long has consistently been the top halfback in the league for many a year. If he's that inconsistent then how did he win a Man of Steel or player of the year?

You can't rule out the mental side of the game and go on skills alone, it's the whole package that makes the player.
Long has won us trophies for a far longer period than Goulding did. There can be only one choice in a team of the SL era.

I agree with you, but Longy had more support from the club when he needed it (gamblegate) than Bobbie did

| There can be [uno[/u debate over Long or Goulding.
Goulding had all the tools to be one of the best SH this country has ever produced and chose not to use them, he blew it basically.
Long has worked at it so he has all those tools and consistently been great for Saints, hence his individual accolades and his trophy haul.

| If you are asking for consistency, Longy is your man, if you wanted a blinding short flash of superb team carrying scrum half play then Goulding would be your choice.
We have been spoiled with having these two from the start of Super League, the next in the 7 shirt has a huge gap to fill eventually.
How many other teams would love to have had the choice of these two [iat their best.[/i
[i(added for Pies and Chemics who may be lost on this board) [/i

| Can I ask why only my good self has picked Alan Hunte on the wing.
We are talking a player with 14 GB caps who played in a world cup final and was regarded as a world class winger.
Compared to Albert who was merely a straight line runner and Sullivan who was exquisite when put into space, but was a liability in defence, and prone to brain farts of the Meli nature.

Sky Sports watchers don't vote for either award.
Long has been consistently the best scrum half in the competition for over 10 years now, unless you mean he's not excelllent in every game he plays, which means you can rule out [ievery[/i player, especially Goulding.

People always seem to forget Sullivans abysmal defensive lapses. He could score amazing tries, but he also conceded absolute howlers.
