If Saints are only prepared to offer one year because he is 29 and has had a bad year with injuries then they are going down the wrong Lee Gilmour route in my opinion. Money wise I have no idea, but I doubt he is commanding any more than he is already on, and as our star player he's bound to be one of our top earners.
I obviously have no idea what the numbers are but the fact remains that we can't replace him like for like, certainly not for next season anyway. So we either have him or we don't, but I feel the club should do everything they can to keep him. If they have to shed the likes of Gardner in order to accommodate him alongside Lance and Boof, then so be it for me.

| Apart from these past twelve months or so Pryce has had a good run so he doesn't have the wear and tear on him that the likes of Sculthorpe, Farrell and even Fielden have and he looks athletic enough to be able to go on for a few more years yet too. Three more years though on top dollar? Two maybe and then a possible reduction but three is a big ask when he'll be 30 at the beginning of next year. Are we really prepared to commit to that? One season yes. Two seasons, I'd take that chance but three? On top dollar too? I wouldn't commit us to three years on that basis. He could be done a yearly renewal but I understand why he'd want a firm commitment to three years from a team even if he could probably stretch his career out by going to yearly contracts.

Yeah but he'll be 30 before the start of next year and three years is a big commitment to a player at that age in our sport as it would be in football.

Out of curiosity, do you think or know that Catalans have offered him 3 years? Some people seem to be in the know but I have no idea other than the rumours on here. I would be surprised to be honest, unless they are hoping for a Menzies-esque miracle.

| That's the rumour. If you want to get big name players to come to your club you have to pay a little bit more though don't you? It's like Man City when they first got their money and wanted to attract big name players. They had to commit to more than what the market was dictating to attract players e.g. Wayne Bridge four and a half year deal. He's not going to go to Catalans for the same deal he could get here unless the lifestyle options are a significant factor for him.

Well you can take 2yrs of the strains of his body due to his injuries he just recovered from? Now a 28 yr old is worth a 2-3 yr contract?

Leon has not signed for anyone or agreed to sign for anyone. He's waiting to see what saints come back with.
However, a club in super league are willing to give him 3yrs

I can kind of seeing where you're coming from, but IMO he's our best player. Roby is fantastic, but Pryce gives us something that no other players gives us and that's organisation and control with the ball.
I would offer him a 2 or 3 year deal on his current contract (I imagine he'll be one of our top earners). Lee Briers is in his 30's, is top class and Wire still rely on him whilst Myler is maturing (and probably has more wear and tear than Pryce). Darren Lockyer is well into his 30's and is top class and has suffered a few bad injuries too. There's plenty of halves knocking around who are in their 30's but are still good enough, and in such a crucial position you rely on that quality and experience. We'd be insane to let another club poach him from us, absolutely insane. Imagine how much Jonny Lomax, Lee Gaskell et al will learn from him over the next few years and then they'll be ready to step up and take over Leon's role.

That's just silly. We don't know that and it could be just as likely that the injuries are an indication of his body's inability to repair itself when injured due to prolonged exposure to the game. If we don't know either you take the risk or you don't and given what we already have coming through the ranks I'm thinking more conservatively on this issue.

I would support a two year deal but three years I'm not so sure on. I'm not sure comparing with Lockyer or Briers is a fair one though. Briers hardly has the same sort of physical play to his game either in attack or defence and not only could you say the same for Lockyer I would also say comparing him to one of the greatest players ever to play the game isn't a fair comparison.

| I'm hoping for a morale boosting announcement of him re-signing in the week leading up to the wigan semi final.
I'm starting to think he'll saty - could be a big helping of wishful thinking though.

They were just examples. I could've added others from both here and the NRL (past and present).
The comparison with Lockyer may seem extreme but Lockyer is the best in the world and Pryce is the best in this country. My main argument is that securing top class half backs is difficult especially British ones and we currently have one. Losing that asset would be a huge mistake at this stage, especially when I believe he has plenty to give. Warrington and Wigan certainly wouldn't think about getting rid of Leuluai or Briers and we shouldn't with Pryce.

I think the difference is that Pryce has had two very serious injuries, the latter one known to be a very difficult one to heal. When Hohaia is coming in and we have a few young halves who have now had a significant amount of first grade experience in their rookie year, it's a big call to decide between re-signing a highly skilled and very experienced but potentially risky player when measured against the young talent we have coming through (younger, fitter).

| Sir mac is still in talks with pryce's agent but if I was a betting man I don't think Leon will be at saints next year.
As it stands it looks like we can't match the offer Catalan has made but his agent is still talking to saints, so let's just wait and see.

| It's a difficult decision for sure, I've read this debate and find myself agreeing with most points and changing my mind after every post.
If he does leave then I have no problems with him going to Catalans, he would give them a real shot at a trophy in the next couple of years which would be massive for the game.
