I agree with this.
I also think it is a far safer and wiser option to do nothing on this occasion.

I think that would be a completely appropriate way of showing their respect for one of their own - and the Wigan supporters can show their own respect by a similar action or - as many are intimating - having the name Newton put on their shirt - or whatever means they feel is most appropriate.
Just as a point of clarification I would feel that the silence was inappropriate if this were any other player from any other club who was currently serving a Drugs ban in the same circumstances.
The uniqueness of this tragic event I feel is completely un parallelled in any sport so we do not have any blue print to work from.
I hope that whetever action is taken that we do not give none RL supporters the chance to discredit our sport or the memory of Terry Newton.

| As much as people disliked Terry, he was one of the best hookers that England and GB has had in recent years.
I for one will respect a man who had the heart and determination to play our great game at the top level and owned up to his wrong doings and took his punishment.
RIP Terry

| Quote ="St. Etrigan"First things first - my heartfelt condolences to all of his immediate family and friends. The tragic circumstances of this incident go wider than rugby. Terry RIP
But can I offer the viewpoint (and if I am completely out of step with the rest of the RL fans then I apologize for any hurt this may cause) that at the showpiece event of Rugby League in this country we should not be seen to be honouring a man who is currently banned from the sport due to willingly taking illegal drugs that , by his own admission, he was taking because he thought they were undetectable not because he made a mistake or had been taking them unbeknownst to himself.
Now with this being the very last domestic game it does put clubs in an awkward position. And I would fully endorse and encourage a minutes silence being held at the grounds where he has played for the teams Leeds, Wigan, Bradford, Wakefield at their next home games as that is a more personal show of respect. But, as is the case now, if a past player dies then it is very rare that this respectful showing is actually held away from the clubs he has played for.
If the RFL do decide to hold this silence on Saturday then I hope that everyone does respect it - but I have a horrible feeling that with the ill feeling some sections of the Saints support have towards the man then this could end up looking very bad - I hope I am massively wrong.'"
A very good point which you are brave and open minded to make at such a time.
I am someone that believes in honesty. So it would not feel right "paying my respects" at the grand final. This is not based on any club localty or even Terrys style of play. I just feel that giving lip service to such a thing would make me a shallow person and devalue previous shows of respect.
Given Newtons past I would hope that the honour of a minutes silence would not be given at the grand final. Terry was a grown man that walked his own path. I think that this would have been the case if Wigan had not been in the final. As Wigan are there I am sure they would want to pay their respects which I understand and respect.
I know there are Saints fans (as well as other fans) that share my feelings. I know this because I have talked to them. So if you also share my opinions please, please do not boo during the minutes silence. We should act with dignity allow others to play there respects. I am planning to sit silently during and allow others to do as they wish.
I have lost friends and relatives in the past. I know how hard times like these can be for the Terrys friends and family. So my genuine warm wishes and thoughts go out to them.
I am sorry if this post has upset you but given my feelings I believe that sitting down is the most respectful (or at least the least disrespectful) thing for me to do. I want to go to and support my team next week. It is not my fault that the RFL may put me in this uncomfortable position. But once again regardless of your feeling can we all allow those who wish to pay their respects to do so with dignity.
Before commenting on my post can you make sure you have read it properly. I hope you can respect my thoughts and feeling as I have (and wish to next week) respect yours.
Thanks

| I personally feel to sit during a minutes silence for a player who represented his country, town and sport is disrespectful. If your decision is based on things away from rugby ie personal reasons between the 2 of you then fair enough, but if it is simply based on 80 minutes a week I think it is a very narrow view of a life that has been lost.
There is much more to life than rugby, as this loss of a young life I would hope puts into perspective.

| Absolutely hideous news. With him being a bit of a pantomime villain for Saints he has, in many ways, been a major figure in my experience of rugby league over the last ten years. He was clearly a born competitor, something which tends to earn a player the adoration of his own club's fans and the anger of opposition ones. Thankfully, at a time like this, most people seem to be able to understand that it is just a game.
Condolences to his family, and rest in peace Terry.

The boundaries seem to be much more of respect for both Terry Newton and, probably more importantly, his friends and families. It is very much a time for if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all.

| Condolences to his family who must be devastated.
Whatever my thoughts on Terry as a player, he made a poor decision which cost him everything. We all make mistakes in life and there needs to be lessons learned here.
If they don't already, the RFL should offer banned players support/counselling after such a ban rather than giving thm the sense that they are cast out in the wilderness.

| Sad to see Terry's 26,000+ members Facebook tribute page hijacked, I just hope respects are paid at the Final. I remember the entire wakefield crowd clapping Saints onto the pitch after the passing of a player, so there are some good folk in RL.

and youve highlighted this to make sure Cunninghams name doesnt get brought up.
Terry Newton had the balls to stand up and admit his failings and his reasons.... Ive always struggled with the "it wasnt me brigade"...
i'm no Fan of Newton more than any other opposition player but the bloke was 31 he had young kids and a wife and a mother & father oh and was a rugby League player a very good one with more GB caps than Cunningham if you want....
you dont have to love him or feel sorry for him just show him some respect by typing something decent on your keyboards and keeping your mouths shut for 60 seconds.....
Christ The Sun has headlines of "Rugby drugs cheat Newton kills himself" ....how nice is that...
surely we can show one of our own a bit more respect
