| I think the backs are very easy to pick.
Wello is a shoe in at full back.
Lyon/Albert and Newlove/Sullivan were teriffic centre/wing combinations.
Martyn and Long were poetry at their best.
The forwards and bench is a lot trickier, but I'd go:
8 James Graham
9 Keiron Cunningham
10 David Fairleigh
11 Chris Joynt
12 Tony Puletua
13 Paul Sculthorpe
Was very tempted to have McVey in over Puletua, but TP looks the goods.
14 Darren Britt
15 Apollo Perelini
16 Paul Anderson
17 James Roby

I would say there is little debate that these 4 are stand out players in their position. Anyone have a different oppinion?

At what point and what would it take for Pryce to overtake Martyn?
Pryce is a very talented player and is probably our X-Factor at the moment but he obviously hasn't done it for long enough - BUT we then could bring into question's Martyn's injury record.
Just a question - don't shout!!!

As for outlandish claims - I would say anybody who has watched the game for any time would have to agree Goulding is a better SCRUM HALF (not player, team man, clubman etc etc) than Long.
So no outlandish claims here!

I think Joynt and Scully are much bigger shoe-ins than Martyn.
Pryce is a close shout to Martyn, and the only thing that edges it for me is the Martyn/Long combo.

I promise i wont shout, and it is a good question, if leon ends here for another 3/4 yrs here could have mmuch more success here than tommy did.
However it would realistically need his game to change completely. No doubting his real talent, but lots of players have that. What made Tommy special was how he could read the game and the opposition. He instinctively knew if they were going to throw a flat pass out wide and on countless occassions ran out of the line for a (from the oppositions point of veiw) heartbreaking try.
I still believe that he would make an awesome coach, he was very badly done to at Leigh and i hope it doesnt put him off for ever.

in your opinion
and i bet if you conducted a poll, most would go for long as the better scrum half, hence why most people have chosen him in this thread.

There you see!
Bobby was a better pure Scrum Half - Long possibly a better player but that wasn't the question - or was it - I forget now......

I'd agree with that. Goulding was a better all round scrum half than Long IMO but what Long has done in the 7 shirt for Saints dwarfes Gouldings achievements. We can't forget that Bobbie lead us to our first championship in 20 odd years but Long has continued that success and shown far more dedication to the club than Goulding ever did.
I also agree twith the point RE: Martyn/Pryce. It's a gnat's whisker between the pair of them for me and if Pryce stays fit and ends his career at Saints then I would imagine he'll overtake Martyn in years to come.

Prescott was, for me, an absolute pleasure to watch. There aren't many guys that made the entry money worth while as easiliy as he did.
As for anyone who doubt tommy Martyn's entry - there's been plenty of times were he's carried a lot of weight on his shoulders (including underperforming half back partners) and when he was fit and firing, we swept all before for us.

| The thing about Tommy Martyn is that he was a great great player for the Saints, but what made everyone love him so much was his character as much as his rugby brain.
Would Pryce ever mischievously kick a spare ball further onto the pitch to put the opposition off at a tap penalty? Or more to the point, would he get interviewed after the game with a big silly grin on his face and claim it was the foot of God? For me it's stuff like this and his obvious love of the game that will leave Tommy tattooed on my rugby memory for ever. Pryce will probably go on to be more successful in his career and win far more medals with the Saints but people will never talk about him with the same warmth and affection as they do about Tommy.

Utter nonsense chappie.
I'd take Gardner over all those except Sullivan (only due to pace) and Albert.

Long has consistently been the top halfback in the league for many a year. If he's that inconsistent then how did he win a Man of Steel or player of the year?
