Can't go for him bud because of his union ties. It must be a league player born and bred otherwise it'd be like putting a statue outside Parliament of somebody not British.

How about he never won the Lance Todd trophy and was sent off for Great Britain at Wembley. There are far more deserving players than him. I don't think he'd even make a top ten.

| Edwards was in 9 finals, so what! he never stood out in any of them, just because he was in the team, that's like picking John O'Shea in football just because he was in so many finals.

If you are going to argue get your facts right.
Edwards played in eleven finals.
He never stood out in any of them?
How about the break for Gregs try in 1989.
How about the break for Mark Prestons try in 1990.
How about being the youngest ever player to play on a Challenge cup final in 1984.
How about playing with a fractured cheekbone and eye socket in 1990 ( I wonder how that came about).
Edwards influence on the Wigan teams he played in was immense, he was the common denominator in all those Wembley victories.
Whether it's him for the statue or not he is certainly one of the front runners.

| Why not Lance todd or Harry Sunderland.
For me if we are picking players why not pick aGB player who has won a test series at least.
Either way if they have strong union ties that just excludes them automatically. Edwards can have a statue at Twickers. lol.

Let's be honest here and put aside the club rivalries. You would have won those finals even if Edwards hadn't been playing. Away from Wembley you can state at case but he never won a man of the match award there and if this is about celebrating our link with Wembley I don't feel a non-contributor or player who was sent off on international duty should get the nod. For goodness sake the Aussies don't even allow players who have been sent off to pick up the Dally M award and yet we're suggesting it for a statue. It's ludicrous.

Wow and yet he still never got the lance Todd ... I'll say it again he was a good player in a great team , nothing more and he was lucky enough to join a team on the way up (i.e all going full time pro) and pretty much stuck around for all of the 'glory years'
Mclennan's right , my lasting memory of Edwards was seeing him trudge off in disgrace after seeing red against the Aussies.. He's not even in the same league as Alex Murphy

| One of the best moments at Wembley in British RL was Davies' try v the Aussies in '94.
Wouldn't mind seeing that moment immortalised - I think we need to get over this 'Union' thing, he was a great RL player and is still an ambassador for the sport.
Like the Bobby Moore statue is about England rather than West Ham, this needs to be about GB rather than club rugby. Mike Greg is also another shout, on that basis.

I don't think it's a question of 'getting over' anything. The statue is supposed to represent a League icon not one who has played a bit of League and then switched to Union. We need someone who is quintessentially League because then he will represent our sport of League. No issue about it really. I also think the statue should represent an English player, and not a foreign one, because Wembley is the home of English rugby league (and, as such, home of rugby league per se).
I'm liking Alex Murphy. A brilliantly gifted rogue who fans loved or loved to hate but who also fought hard for his country and still believes we should stand on our own two feet rather than simply try to copy the Aussies.

Another pointless stat in the context of the statue. I refer you back to my comments earlier comments of playing in a great team against mainly part time opponents.

But you could also argue that the likes of Murphy, Boston , Fox etc played against teams the likes of Blackpool Borough, Huyton/Liverpol City, Doncaster, Batley etc.

Davies hardly 'played a bit of league then switched to union' though. He's still involved in RL now.
That moment is a fantastic moment in British RL and worthy of recognition, IMO.
