I don't know, but he's playing hooker for the academy apparently. Surely just being in the first team, with little expectation and no pressure from the club, would be better than not being in the first team? Even if it is in a position they don't seem him playing long term?

| And that's the problem with the salary cap, it's preventing the club from giving younger players the opportunity to stake a claim in the first team when injuries clearly demand it. A player promoted from the academy should be exempt from the cap in the first season, then 50% of their salary exempt for the duration they are with the club.

No, no its not. Its amazing how quickly incorrect facts spread about the salary cap, and then become gospel

But he's played a lot at 6 and some at 1, presumably linked to being the modern 3rd pivot.
That means that he's better equipped to play 6 for the firsts than anyone who's not injured.

That's very interesting. It seems to hint you can pay your senior players up to the full cap, then bring though as many kids as you like in the year and pay them whatever you like?

The key phrase is "within reason" - in our current situation, it is perfectly reasonable for us to request an exemption, should Charnock have appearance based triggers in his contract. What wouldnt be reasonable is if we tried to bring him through with no injuries, or, if a team tried to give of say £1m for the current season (which they were seeking exemption for) and then the player waiving his salary for the remaining 4 years of his contract (say).
It boils down to a case of "do the rfl think this exemption is helping a team in some way circumvent the cap or just necessary in rugby terms" - the latter is fine (and our situation with Charnock arguably)

| But if charnock is being used as a 9, then that is not a problem to solve our current 7 situation.

Why? Because you reckon so? Surely to be playing he needs to impress the people who watch over and assess him every day, and know a lot more about junior development than you or I put together?

| Whilst I'm pleased that we won't have to worry about Walsh on Friday, its sad that its caused by such a serious injury. He's been a real star this season and its been a real pleasure to watch him. Lets hope his recovery is a complete one and that he comes back as strong as ever.

I don't think he's ready and I don't think he will make it in super league at a top club. Just my opinion

I will trust Browns judgement that he's not ready, that fair enough. The want it now culture of saints fans is out in force though (same with Savelio)
He will go one of two ways (as with most youngsters who have a rep before making first team) - he'll either thrive and go on to superstardom or fail to live up to expectation and end up as Bradford fodder. No way for any of us to really tell which way it'll go

Nobody would be talking about Charnock if we had a proper stand off at the club and Walsh was fit, it's not like he's bee. Tipped to be a star or even stands out at u19s like the likes of Percy, Saveilio, Richards etc has.
If Brown doesn't think Charnock is ready, then he's 100% right not to pick him but regarding Andre, it seems strange he's not played more often but IMO we are being cautious due to his recent illness and injuries.

| Alls I'm saying is he plays in the position wer looking for and need , a full back and 2nd rower wer using when a young lad could play maybe won't be a world class kid but should do a job , he will get experience and can only get better at what he does ,

Disagree on that one mate, obviously I can only go off what I read about it, but he's regularly mentioned in reviews, and been picked out by a couple of opposition fans as standouts. He has the skills, but so did Yates, Ellis and a few others, it's up to him to be patient, take his chances and continue to develop

Except he isn't. Were fine for 13. If you want to be calling for a youngster, Hewitt is your man. As for being world class, people far more knowledgable than either of us have deemed that not to be the case yet (not to say he won't go on to be) - since you bring up the all hail wigans fabulous development brigade throwing charnock in now would be the equivalent of what Wigan did a couple of years ago with brown and Robinson, too much too young, burn them out, and letting them have half the career they could,

And your comparing a 19 year old to one of the most complete players in a generation in Sculthorpe. Were in serious danger of a Gaskell mrk.II here...
And brown and the other coaches at saints disagree with you, they deem him not ready. That doesn't mean he won't ever be, but throwing him in at the business end this year will do far more damage than good. As would playing him against "lesser teams" earlier in the season because he's not ready. Our junior 7 is Hewitt, if your going to champion throwing a kid in, then that's the name you need to be calling for.

Jack Hughes is/ was a centre in academy, is a second row in first team, Powell and Williams are both halfbacks who have played hooker this year, just to name a few Wigan kids playing out of position this year.
He will get his chance. It's not now or never. It might be next season or a few after that, but to get it he needs to impress the right people, which he hasn't done so far. That doesn't mean he won't do, but by your argument every player in the academy should play super league to "get his chance" but it doesn't work like that.
