Thats because they probably weren't, just like 99% of play the balls in every other match.

Thems the rules as they stand - just think they are a bit of a waste of the paper they are printed on - just like feeding the scrum is still in the rule book.
And nobody is disagreeing because nobody can be d going back over the video - in every set of six I bet there is an "illegal" play the ball for every team so you arent being clever pointing it out.

Apparently there's some daft rule involving voluntary tackles as well. There should be a thread on this...

Yes but there only about 8 scrums per game, and around 300 play the balls.

I think if teams like the goons didn't hold down for so long; then the resulting play the balls would be done in less of a rush in an attempt to counter this and try to speed the play up.
If certain teams didn't slow the game down there would be no need to play the ball so quickly that the foot doesn't make contact.
Two sin binnings wasn't it in your game for slowing play down?
At the end of the day spoiling tactics suit wigan and quick plays suit us.
I'd be happy if eveyone was pinged for incorrect PTB's if also everyone guilty was pinged for half the squad piling on a player at each tackle and then taking 5 minutes to get off. Thats the way to free flowing rugby.

...Also, why now is nearly every fumble given as a knock-on, whether it as gone sideways, slightly backwards or blatantly backwards!
I agree if the ref is unsure if its gone backwards or not, give the scrum, but it is sometimes so obvious the ball as gone behind the player and yet he still gives the scrum!
This seems to be another rule that seems to have changed gradually.

Spot on, this.
We'll all tend to defend the speedy PTB (who cares if it's heeled, look at Roby go!), and scream for anyone not leaping off the tackled player to be beheaded, as it's brought us great results.
Likewise, Wiganers will claim that the speedy PTB is the work of the devil but accept that lying on a tackle long enough to be declared legally dead is acceptable.
The truth is neither technique is conducive to what we all want to see - a great spectacle of skilfull RL.
But you can't tidy up one while accepting the other - as you point out, both offences need reigning in.

| The 'step over' PTB is exploited by all teams; and a fast PTB improves the spectacle of the game so surely a good thing?
My bugbear is forward passes. Everyone feels demeaned by them and - horror! - RU fans can scoff at our game because of them. Yes, I know they're hard to police but I'd like to make it easier for the refs to call them.
So, how about awarding a penalty for a forward pass? Isn't that still the case for an 'intentional' forward pass? I'm sure coaches would adapt and the game would become more skillful, rather than 'pass and crash'?
Okay, so now I'm in la-la-land....

Unfortunately the highlights on the SL website don't show the disallowed Leeds try that you would have given - if it did I've no doubt that there would have been an incorrect play the ball somewhere in the build up that you decided to ignore since it was against Saints.

| Quote ="Rogues Gallery"I've just watched boots 'n' all "the tries".
Saints six tries, five of them should have been chalked off for not playing the ball with the foot (you could argue at least two for no attempt). All the tries come fromwithin 10 metres of the line and that split second advantage gives the attacking team far too much of an advantage.
Then the HKR v crusaders game, no wonder Noble said some decisions went against them at crucial times, there must have been at least five tries scored from forward passes.
Please watch before commenting.'"
I agree but watching the whole programme most tries should have been disllowed. The Jordam tansey ball steal was a diabolical decision, the ball was knocked on , the cats player picked it up and Tansey reefed it, if that was asvantage over then I've seen it all.
I agree we got a few passes that could eb given as forward, the Newton to Fox one was a bit laughable but that was at 42-10 with 3 mins to go. The others would never have been given in any match. Once a passing movement is done at speed unless its blatantly forward its never given.
Noble was just having a whinge, Crusaders were woeful and the ref had no bearing on the game whatsoever. I also notice he never complained that their second try came from a penalty that should have gone the other way.

But there is no law stating how many men you have in the tackle. There IS a law that says that the ball should be placed on the floor and played with either the heel or the foot.
Free flowing Rugby.
Which team has three player (all who have played on the wing this season) in the top five try scorers and also have the top try scoring forward?

There's also an "agreement" not to contest scrums too but that didn't stop Feka in the last derby.

you are right, there isnt. However, there is a rule about breaking from the scrum before the ball is behind the 2nd rowers legs - which Sean O'Loughlin did on the way to Wigans first try on Good Friday.
I assume that you refused to celebrate the try that came from such a flagrant disregard of the rules.

| Personally I understand where Rogues is coming from in his original post - I thought at the time it was being refereed a bit differently than usual.
Arguably it made for a better game to watch though - certainly one of the more entertaining Saints games I've seen recently.

Of course there is and you know there is and everyone knows there is. Just because it's not said out-loud doesn't make it not so.

Correct but there is a law which stops holding down resulting from 7 men per tackle. Thats what I was referring to as you well know laddy!

Which goes back to my point that the four corners of coaches, players, refs and Red Hall need to do something about it.
