Well, I guess he's about the level of class for Wigan anyway!
No surprise that they are recruiting an antipodean. For all that Rogues boasts about their u20s team winning grand finals, they clearly can't produce a centre.

As you obviously "follow" my posts you will know that I have been bemoaning the lack of decent centres in our game for a while. I know Wigan have been looking for ages to try and find one or two. I have never thought that Goulding or Marsh were the answers in that position although they can do a decent job. (Both will get their chance to see if they are up to it this coming season, but I expect it to be their last)
England for instance have had to go overseas to fill one of those positions (Jack Reed). George Carmont at 33 again made the dream team this year.
It's a position we have struggled with since Senior and Gleeson moved on.
Who was the last decent centre Saints produced?
It's an English RL problem position.
Regarding Gelling, he was a 19 year old lad who made a stupid mistake, and rightly paid for it by being sacked. I wonder why Saints didn't do it with Long? (you have read his book I presume)
If Wire can sign the dog molester then I'm sure a bit of cr@p can be forgiven
Gelling may turn out to be another Kevin Iro ,
or then again he may be a Paul Koloi

I'm pretty sure I remeber you suggesting Goulding should make the England squad last year, since he was reliable and could cover centre and wing. Dissapointed Charnely isn't going to get the gig in the centre.
When he plays, Wheeler is a cracking centre, we also have Tommy Mak who looks very promising. Before that? Loughlin, Hunte, Connolly?
The incident is nothing to worry about, worse things happen at sea. However, the fact he was released over it suggests he's not the next kevin iro, though.
I'd suggest we've got a better crop now than the last decade. Whilst their not Newlove and Connoly, we have the likes of Yeaman, Shenton, Atkins, Bridge and promising youngsters like Rhys Evans, Tommy Makinson, the young lad at leeds who's name I can't think of and Joe Arundle. A few years back, I bet 75% of 1st choice SL centres were foriegn, I'd suggest its a lot better now.

I did indeed, but the words were reliable and as cover. I don't think he is good enough as a centre and neither is Marsh although I believe both will be given an opportunity (probably their last) this coming season.
Loughlin, Hunte and Connolly were almost twenty years ago, and in reality only Connolly was top drawer.
In the future I do like the looks of Rhys Evans and Callum Watkins. There's also a very good young prospect at Saints named Mark Percival, but that's a long way away. As I said it's been a problem position in the game for a while. Like you I would Charnley a run there at Wigan (I believe he has just signed a new extended/better deal) which would allow us to give Russell and King a game or two.
Anyway I'll be there on Saturday cheering whoever has the England shirt on.

Loughlin,
'" Loughlin's pomp was before my time as a speccy, but I'm led to belive he was the best centre in britain and was subject to numerous bids to sign him by Wigan.
[size=85It was tongue in cheek when I mentioned them, given how long ago it was.[/size
Some one on here updated us about some start performances by Percevil last season.
Hopefully, this season, Wheeler will get a decent run of it.
Are there still rumours of him moving to Wigan?

Here's what I was told. Wigan tried to sign Wheeler in 2009, ready for the 2010 season. They had offered Carmont a one year deal. Saints offered Carmont a two year deal, which Wigan subsequently matched and he stayed at Wigan. Wheeler also got a very increase on his Saints salary and stayed there.
I haven't heard anything about Wheeler coming to Wigan this off season apart from the message board rumours.
Whilst we're talking about young players to keep a look out for.
George Williams and Ryan Hampshire look to be a potential great half back pairing at Wigan. Both were in the undefeated U16 Wigan side this year and starred in the thrashing of France by England at Odsal.
Stevie Ward at Leeds a 17 year old with loads of ability, can play 6 or 13, and his second row partner Jordan Baldinson.
Savellio and Percival at Saints look outstanding prospects as does Mike Learmonth at Warrington(they stole him from Leeds )

I can't imagine Wheeler leaving saints, not with the way they've supported him. He obvioulsy has their faith and should hopefully be determined to pay them back.
Regarding our youngsters, from the slightly older lads, I'm hoping to see a bit of Forster this season, who aparently looked good on his debut against quins, and I wonder whether Greenwood will manage a debut? He's talked up by few who've seen him and certianly has a much more impressive physical appearence than some of our recent young backrows.

Signing three more foreign players who are not available to the England national team is not my idea of a positive move. With Lauaki and Gelling that makes it 5 players Wigan have signed that are not available to the England national team.
Such a great way to spend the extra cap money they've been granted.

It certainly is. If only Saints could have afforded to do it. Well they probably could if they hadn't borrowed £6 million to finish the stadium.
And we'll be able to offer the younger players educational opportunities at Central Park just in case they don't fulfil their potential.
Is it true that Saints Fan has applied for a job there?

What about Kel Coslett, John Warlow, John Mantle, Roy Mathias, Bob Prosser, Scot Gibbs, Clive Griffiths, Jonathan Griffiths, Frank Wilson (great lad) etc who all I presume spoke the very best Queens English. I'm sure they were all welcomed at Saints.

It's not irritating me, it's funny. And it's a worthwhile topic of discussion. Leneghan clearly has a vision of how he sees RL working in the sporting marketplace amongst much bigger fish and his work over the last few weeks has had more direction and strategic thinking behind it than the RFL have managed in years and I applaud that. But with him being Wigan chairman, there is always the doubt about whether his intentions are honest and he's controlling the future of the game with it's future growth in mind or whether it's just a cynical scheme to maximising Wigan's benefit given the weakness of the sport's governing body.
