a survey of the town by the tourist boad 10 years back said, opening up the canal would be top of their agenda to help attract more tourist to the town.

Tourists? To St Helens? I mean, it's my home town and all that, but other than for visits to family or friends, I just cannot envisage 'tourist' and 'St Helens' sitting in a familiar fashion in the same sentence.

As for the stadium ... first we had the crisis at Taylor Wimpey, which slowed down matters, then we had blatherings from Langtree over the price they had settled on Knowsley Road; land which is now lower in value than when the contract was agreed. Those two factors have held up matters. However, that there is now a date on the table - November 27th - is helpful because once we start dealing in specific dates, then there is a chance things will actually get moving. I'm looking forward to seeing this 3D plan thingy of the proposed finished product.

I wonder what is happening to that great big eyesore called the bottle shop?

Soem kid set fire to it on November the 5th 2009. Such a shame.

It is not only the Tourist Board who see the development and work on the Sankey Canal as vital for the future!

I still question Langtree and the way this project has been handled and also some at the Club?

Saints.
Haydock Park.
Dream.
St Helens Festival.
St Helens Comedy Festival.
Music Festival.

All of which, if marketed correctly, can bring a decent number of tourists into the town.

Its my home town as well, and I accept every Town or UK City attempts to bring in some tourist trade, Cragganmore Kid lists a few, but misses out the Glass Museum which advertises regular in the national newspapers especially around bank holidays and special events (have to admit I have never been and never visit the Pilkington Museum on Prescot Road)

World of Glass, good call.

Also, the Transport Museum.

Not to mention the 9(?) green flag parks in the borough.
Plenty ways to attract tourists into our town.

Well worth a visit! The glass blowing is fantastic to watch. The film thingy is a bit dated now but I'd recommend a looky see around the glass museum to anyone and everyone. I enjoyed going around the tunnels, too (although I don't think they tunnels when they were in use, it's just that they look that way now).

Did anyone mention the North West Transport Museum?



I know what's here, but I still can't visualise tourists and St Helens in the same sentence!

I think once the new stadium is up and running, our attractions maybe will benefit, especially if we hold internationals here.

The Tunnels were the old gas flues used to fire the Glass furnaces when Pilks and UGB used to produce thier own gas and then sell off the surplus coke that they didnt use to the coal merchants. The trouble with the Transport Museum is that it only opens at weekend cause its manned by volunteers

So if I go watch Saints play Hull in Hull or to a comedy night in Warrington (aren't all nights comedy nights in Warrington?) does that make me a tourist?

I consider myself to be a tourist when I go on holiday, and there's no way I would [iever [/iconsider a holiday in St Helens despite having grown up there and still having family there.

Your definition of a tourist is a narrow one, then.

Why don't they get Changing Rooms in to do it? They'd have it done in a weekend.

The old man has made a pledge to make it to the new ground before he 'goes out' but they keep putting it back. We were meant to be playing in it from the start of next season. Still nearly 2 years away, seems ridiculous.

Bloody hell man, it's a miracle we're getting it built at all given the circumstances!

What's ridiculous is people who think that after all that has gone on in the last 18 months, building a new stadium is as easy as clicking your fingers.

With the saving's on Long,Scully,Cayless,Talau etc's wages we can now order some steel for next year

The party contracted to buying KR sailing extremely close to failure (as in days) given the trading conditions for the housebuilding sector.

Sourcing, and maintaining, our own funding for the project at a time when it's almost impossible to do so for a business such as Saints.

Langtree being able to press ahead with the development at a time when new lending for new developments is notoriously difficult to obtain.

If we start construction in the first quarter of 2010 McManus will have pulled off a minor miracle and rather than being berated for things being 6 months behind an outline schedule, he should be carried shoulder high for effectively saving our club and safeguarding it's future.

Yeah no doubt he's done well. I wasn't slagging him off, just bemoaning the time these things take.
