| As harsh as it may sound, let's hope so. Turner for Shenton is a no-brainer.

| Doesn't really improve us too much though does it.
Turner in is one of 7 backs spots, Lomax another. We're still 5 short of having a decent lineup.

As always, I shall take your 'negative for the sake of being negative' attitude with a pinch of salt!
I agree our back line needs shaking up, but we don't need another 5. Jones and Makinson are very good players in the making.
Next year I'd love to see:
Lomax
Swift/Gardner
Turner
Jones
Makinson
NEW SIGNING
Gaskell/Wheeler
So shipping Hohaia out and signing Finch for example would make our back 7 look a whole let better.

So are you suggesting we should just stick with being 6 short?

No, I just think having Shenton around might not be a bad idea. He's not a bad player by any means. Turner looks a decent player, but in reality he's not proven himself to be any better than Shenton. A lot of Saints fans are judging him on his gallop against us and he hasn't been getting positive reviews for his performances until this season and his defense seems to be a major issue.
We'll go into next season with Wellens at fullback no doubt. The club has shown no willingness to move him so far, so unless Brown has stated his desire to move him out, he'll be at fullback. Makinson, decent player though he is, doesn't score enough or do enough individually, nor do Josh Jones or Gary Wheeler who look set for the other centre spot (Jones no doubt winning that battle quite easily). We'll also be stuck with the same halves we have this season, unless the club can pull something out of the bag with Lance's P45.
It's not a 'bad' backline, but compared to the likes of Leeds, Wigan, Wire and Huddersfield it's definitely lacking.

I think it makes real sense. Turner has only been playing centre for a couple of years, so it's no surprise that he's taken some time to hit the mark defensively, but he's looked good whenever I've seen him play this year, not just against us. I'm under no illusion that he is the finished article, but he represents a strike threat, which is something we sorely lack. Turner may not have yet proven himself to be better than Shenton, but he is young, is still learning, and, importantly, has the raw athleticism which Shenton lacks. Conversely, Shenton has proven himself not to be the test-standard player we paid for. I reckon if we pull this off we'll be getting a potentially much better player for quite a bit less money.

| If Shenton does go then that's great for him (as he's been average here) and the club (opens up a huge chunk of the SC)
2. Gardner
3. Turner
4. Jones/Wheeler
5. Makinson/Swift
I think there's a lot of potential there for Brown to work with. If you looked at Hudds back-line before Brown came people were saying that it was average, but it had potential. This 3/4 has a lot of potential IMO.

What has Turner actually shown? has had some decent games this year for them but in the previous 2 seasons has been very poor.

Unlike Welham who, of course, is the player that everyone is chasing.

indeed. even more baffling that he isnt off contract, and they are having to go through protracted negotiations to get him.
Expensive mistake from Saints, but looks like costing us even more money to get him off the books. Is he really that ineffective that it is worth paying him upwards of £20/30k to go away?

Probably another £65-75k on the cap for us to spend swopping Shenton on £135k for Turner on probably £60-70k.
Add on what we are paying Perry, Hohaia, Wellens, Flannery and Meli when they are sent on their way we probably could afford a few quality backs.

Eventually but only once he has done the rounds and no one else wants him like Danny Orr.

I'd like to think that Saints would not pay any severance package to Shenton for him to go.
Could be tricky if he is on mega coin as he'll want to use that to his advantage, but would the player rather move on and play at a new club or sit in the stands for the season?
Sitting on a 6 figure salary may persuade him to sit on it though!

It is no-one best interests to have him sat in the stands at Langtree Park for a year, least of all his own in the World Cup year, but he has a contract for 3 years at £135k (apparently), if he goes to earn £75k at Hull KR, he is £60k down on his career earnings. No doubt they will come to some agreement to split the difference.

Why would you take that stance? He's a player who we cannot question in terms of effort or commitment. He suffered a very serious injury playing for us in the Grand Final, a game in which he played really well. If the club has decided to call time on his stint with us and is offering him round to other clubs, I'd be expecting them to pay him compsensation if the deal he moves to isn't as lucrative as his current Saints deal.

I understand that, but you pick a team on form rather than on how much money they earn. Shenton's form doesn't deserve a spot on the team atm, and if Turner comes in then he will fall further down the pecking order if his poor form continues.

I wouldn't take any stance, but Turner coming in will push him down the pecking order [i[uIF [/u[/i his poor form continues.

| Question is would Shenton be a better player under a better coach than the ones he's played under at Saints when in all fairness as a team in general you have looked poles apart from the standards as an opposing fan I expect to see in a Saints team?
IMHO as an outsider looking in and watching your games on TV and seeing you when we played you earlier in the season you look a team bereft of ideas and look like we did under Agars tenure as Coach. Gentle has had pretty much the same players with a few additions that were already signed before he arrived and he has already made huge changes to us as a team and to the players individually. You also seem to have the same problem we had in that some of your old reliable players that have served you well in the past should now be let go.
Think also Hohaia & Perry are looking pretty poor and you do not seem to have replaced the quality you have lost over the last few seasons apart from the odd exception. I would say many players are out of form individually for you but also on the whole as a team.

Something I belive is one of Shenton's strenghts.

| Mixed feelings if he moves - he's been a big disappointment so far overall but I can't help but feel he might become the player we signed in the first place if fit and under a decent coach and gameplan. This also means we're committing to having either Wheeler or Jones or another U20 player or someone playing out of position as the other centre which might backfire on us massively given Wheeler's fitness record and Jones still being a few years away from the finished article. I'm a bit more nervous for next season now...

Experienced SL centre, played at international level, not a bad start. The lad is still young and one reason or another has not come on as much as you fans would like since his move from Cas.
