| Strongest squad all year.
Dixon/Gaskell to miss out - would start TP/Graham at prop with Flannery/Wilkin/Soliola in the back row to ensure we have 2 props on the bench (LMS/Clough) since Wigan will have 2+2 (Prescott/Lima/Coley/Mossop) and we need to make sure we don't become lightweight when Graham/TP are spelled.

Exactly what I'd do too, but can't see Royce doing it unfortunately. Although he did against Hull KR so there's always a possibility I suppose.

| Is that your team or what you think Royce will do?
I'd much rather him swap Flannery for TP/LMS but I think you're spot on, depending on Clough's fitness after his run out. He's not like to manage more than 20-25mins after so long out.

| Has Clough had a run out for the reserves?
I agree we should keep two props on the bench and start with a back row of Wilks, Flanders & Sia.

That's what I think he'll do, personally I'd start 2 props on the bench.

He's goign to be a great asset against wigan, I think.
His ability to win a couple of extra yards in contact will come in very handy against a defence that moves up extra quick.

He's a workhorse, exactly what we need back in the side.

Wigan fans will tell you that Fielden had a very good season for them last year, and Cloughy matches up to him stat wise.
Almost identical tackles per game and metres per carry but with Cloughy missing fewer tackles, making three times fewer errors and giving away half as many penalties.
He's a tremendous prop IMO, a real quality player to have around the squad.

| So pleased with that squad. Would love all of them to be 100% fit as well and if so, I think we've got a huge chance. Agree entirely with FTV's team selection as well. Clough back is a massive bonus as long as he is up to speed which the reserve run out should have given him.
Bring it on.

I'm told all will play, the only question mark being over Jammer. However, the bulging disc is back in place but he is still having a few back spasms. The medical team are confident he'll be ready to go on Saturday.

Graham my force Royce's hand with props on the bench too.
If Graham is realistically only up to 50-55mins instead of 65+ as usual then we may be forced to start with 2 on the bench to rotate better.

| It's about time the club showed some metal. Drop Wello, he's not up to a game like this. Play him=lose, simples:
7. Kyle Eastmond
28. Thomas Makinson
3. Michael Shenton
5. Francis Meli
22. Jamie Foster
6. Leon Pryce
20. Jonny Lomax
11. Tony Puletua
9. James Roby
10. James Graham
4. Sia Soliola
13. Chris Flannery
12. Jon Wilkin
14. Scott Moore
15. Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook
16. Paul Clough
25. Lee Gaskell

Strong sentiments, which I would be inclined to agree with. However, it won't happen. I'd have him on the bench over Gaskell personally, more utility value and experience.

| The kicking game could be vital especially if it is wet.
Just kicking for touch may gain ground but gives them possession without any pressure. [unless it is a 40-20
We need the type of kick which puts their full back under pressure so that we can compete for possession whilst the ball is in the air, or at least 'hit' the receiver as soon as his feet touch the ground.
Make no mistake they will do that to us, possibly a case for playing Wellens. Maybe recently he may not have been at his best but that has been in wet days and possibly carrying some injury.
Added to that Wigan will be kicking to the left wing - Pat Richards. So we need to work out the best way of combating that weapon. Saints have not been at their best when defending kicks.
For the type of kicking we want - see Bobby Golding at Wembley - I think it was 1996 or thereabouts.
Best wishes Saints

Wellens is not the right man to be defending kicks. Unless they are dead central beneath the black dot he won't be in the right position for them anyway. He's even dropped a few of those this season, such as Tomkins' try in the hammering at Widnes.
I can see it already, young Mackinson being out jumped by Richards for Wigan's 9th try while Wellens arrives just as Richard's is kissing his badge camply to the Goon fans, doing his usual disgusted face and swing of the arms/cricket appeal to the officials.
We need a new fullback ultra quick.

for that to work wigan would need an inept full back like Bradford had that day in Nathan "bomber" Graham. Would imagine he still has sleepless nights remembering that match

| To beat Wigan you need to win the ruck.
Far easier said than done, but they control that area with such dominance that if you get on top you can cause them some serious problems.

Agree with you.
There's no real excuses (although the 7 injured players Royce talked about is a concern), but with that squad we should at least compete. Let's hope we turn up Saturday, because if we do it'll be an absolute cracker.
