I have no problem with Wello staying for another year...after all, 50% of his salary is exempt from cap since his testimonial and has a lot of experience to help the younger players coming through. Would also imagine, as per Cunningham, he will be signing for less money making him a decent & cheap-ish option as a squad player.

My problem will be if NB continues to move players around to accommodate him in the 13. With Lomax being lined up to play full back, Brown must realise Wello is a full back and if J-Lo is playing there Wello doesnt play! Simples!

We need to sign another half back to play alongside Walsh (as Hohaia clearly isnt in NB's plans and Wheeler manages 1 game every 3 months) and Wello is not the answer to this. Could prove a good signing (used as cover and even play him at full back in lesser games moving Lomax into the halves) but anything more than this isn't what we need going forward

I don't mind him staying, as long he's there to help along the younger players and fill in when needed. I hope he isn't going to be first choice and a guaranteed starter.

The problem is, he's not just helping our youngsters, he's standing in their way when everyone (well, at least us armchair experts) want the likes of Swift, Yates and Charnock to be broken in.

This. I can't wait until the club announce the Laffranchi and Wellens deals. They are going to get roasted on Twitter and Facebook. I just cannot understand why the club and Wello himself would even consider extending the misery like this. Anyone who looks at his performances will see he's not good to play in the team. If he's not good enough, why sign him up again? Wello himself has got to look at his performance levels and be a bit more honest with himself. He's at least 2 years beyond his best and should recognise that and step down.

I want the young lads in as much as everyone else, I mean helping and developing behind the scenes. Can't see Brown not playing him though.

This is the problem. He is obviously very highly valued for his leadership and for the example he sets to the other players in terms of professionalism and competitiveness, and with that in mind I can understand why he is still wanted at the club. But you just know that Brown will be bending over backwards to fit him in the team somewhere, whether his on-field performance merits it or not.

If that's the case, surely there is a academy coaching job there for him?

Now that you think the club is a joke, I assume that you will no longer be supporting it. That would be a real shame because I actually quite enjoy reading your posts on here. It's been very entertaining. But, I suppose everything has to come to an end at some point.

All of them, also they all played 10 minutes for Liverpool St Helens before they signed their last contracts, so we're quids in.

We,ve had a few full backs in the past who have carried on finished there career in the pack, Frankie Barrow, Kel Coslett, Phil Veivers and probably others. The problem with Wellens is that he,s not been able to make that transition having operated at 1, 6 and 13 this season.
Wellens obviously has some asset value outside of match days and there is only Wilkin who can offer experience and leadership during match days.
The question is who will be the next 3 players who can offer the combination of leadership, experience, influential play thats needed to gel a team together towards success.

Wello just doesn't have the power or aggression to be in the pack or the dimunitive qualities you need to be in the halves. In other words, his time is up. I'd love him to stay behind the scenes with KC .

I thought it applied to all players who have had a testimonial with the club, and they got upto £50k per year of their salary exempt from the cap (could be wrong that was just the way I understood it).

Either way, Wellens had his testimonial before Wilkin & Gardner, and Roby's testimonial year is 2014 so wont be his until after that. I cant see Wello commanding top dollar any more, and even if we paid him £100k a season only £50k would count on the cap. I think we would struggle to get a squad player to come in on £50k a year or less who is a better option than Wello and for that reason I think it is a good move to keep him (as long as it is as a squad player)

The thing is, if Wellens left we could get the £50k allowance on Wilkin's salary instead (you can only get the allowance on one salary), so it's not a saving in real terms.

Give over. Take Wellens' name and past achievements out of the equation and he's not worth a place. The likes of Swift are better in every position Wello plays, and I'm sure the likes of Charnock and Yates are too so why bother keeping him?

Going to be very interesting where we play him next year. He's lost his fullback role and IMO he can't play any other postion.

We've had him practicing his best welsh accent. The delay in announcing the new contract is because McManus hasnt had time to head over to the RFL yet and cry about how unfair the salary cap is and demand we can keep Wello for free for the good of the game.
