That may be so, but it doesn't change the fact that had there been another ref in charge, the hit on Wheeler by Hoffman might have been judged as late and a penalty would have been forthcoming. I think it was late, if Wheeler had time to look up before Hoffman hit him (and that is what Wheeler has said).
The game is different now because it is professional, players (correctly) have rights and clubs/the RFL have a duty of care to those players. We can still have our biff and our big hits but they should be played out within the context of minimising what is already a very risky sport for the individuals playing it.
