Not bad for a player many on here would not have selected

He didn't have a good game, he was distinctly average. Better than Sinfield, but not good. Came up with the deciding plays and credit for that, but made so many poor options throughout the game. We were completely outplayed in the halfs, the Hull KR pair very impressive. Our kicking really poor.

Our right hand side, Ward, Watkins, Briscoe looked excellent, our left hand side Ablett, Moon, and Hall not so good.

Defensively we were poor, and those listening to radios are clutching at straws saying we tightened up. Totally wrong, as Hull KR just did not execute their chances like the first half. They should have gone 20 points up start of second half, and that would have finished it.

Our expansive game got us the tries that were enough to win the game. But it wasn't always pretty, we pushed some shockingly bad passes, and we should concentrate the offloads on players capable, as some simply are not.

Some good tries scored, but can't help feeling disappointed after the time and money spent.

Whilst I agree listening to the radio provides only a certain amount of knowledge of the match its not really clutching at straws. watkins and Briscoe sounded very involved throughout and good performers. Ward on the other hand, I only heard his named mentioned ONCE in an 80 minute match.......whilst commentary can often paint a slightly inaccurate picture I would go with he didn't exactly shine if his name wasn't mentioned more than once.

It's funny how some posters always push/criticise the same players.

Gotcha - been building up Ward & Sutcliffe all of pre-season showings like they're tearing the house down when in reality they've been good but not amazing. Cue praise of Ward in a match we hear nothing about him and trying to pour cold water on McGuire (in Sutcliffe's position) when he sounded pretty good even if there was some flaws (didn't one of the HKR halves Kelly gift us the opening try with a high shot that gave away field position?)

That is pretty stupid post, to try and justify radio listening as proof of something. And for what it's worth I didn't big up Ward, and suggest you reread the line I used. I specifically referred to the right hand side, rather than individual, and was referring to the unit. They worked very well together, and each played their part in a strong showing there.

To be honest the fact that a radio summarisor doesn't mention someone's name means jack all. Most of them name the wrong player when commentating. But for what it is worth Ward did a massive load of cover defence, and as I didn't stay at home, and actually supported the team, I can say that with substance, rather than third hand.

I do think Sutcliffe should have been in, you are right, I thought him and McGuire have worked well together in preseason, and we should have stuck with it. Please also remember I have previously written off Sutcliffe has a long term half.

To be fair someone who actually went to the game is in an infinitely better position to remark on players performance than someone listening on the radio.

I agree, still a player who doesn't really get mentioned at all can't have been "excellent".....even if the commentators are a bit clumsy.

why? the commentators were a joke. talking amongst themselves most of the time. it was mainly rovers they spoke about too, even when leeds had the ball

What do you call excellent though? The player scoring a try? Or a player providing links and non stop tackling? Are they not equally important to a team?

I am not saying others that went will agree with my opinion. But you have to accept that a radio summarisor misses off links in play, and does not name the tacklers doing the defence, unless it is a try saved or something. Unless this particular summarisor was somehow different to the rest.

Ward didn't make any major errors, nor did he do anything spectacular, that would suggest he's had an average performance, but given the fact I've stood there for 80 mins and noticed him possibly 3 times at most should tell you he was below average, ward wasn't the only one in my opinion that just rode the game so to speak but I'd prefer he doesn't get picked for widness next week, not when there's players again only in my option bring more to the table and bring more energy.

As a whole getting the win is a massive result considering how we went down, the last thing I expected when setting off to hull this morning was to concede 30 points, I also wasn't expecting to score 40 though, we look good with the ball but without it we were terrible in periods, hull made far too many breaks, I think they'll do very well this season if they get a lot of ball.

I listened to game on radio and heard cuthbertson mentioned alot making off loads too which bodes well i hope.can anyone at the game summaries his performance please

A bit how I see it. Whilst disappointing to concede 30 I think really the 30-40 scoreline says more about HKR's upcoming season than ours. They'll score points but they'll concede quite a few too.

Not to the level he looked in preseason. But did look a very good go to with ball, very unpredictable. Did appear to miss a couple of key tackles though.

Really we've got 13 new players so will gel over time and only improve. Leeds however are a team that knows each other really really well. Lets not forget Dixon dropped a ball over the line which should really have been a try, That would have gave us a 20pt lead which Leeds may not of recovered from. Also Kelly was brought back and given a penalty when he was odds on to score, On another day advantage is called and Rovers score again.

Minimum would have been a penalty and a sin binning. He'd just chipped ahead of the Leeds player despite him pulling him back by his shirt collar when he'd already kicked the ball ahead.

Why not - depends whether his contribution is what commentators talk about i.e. Watkins or hard graft such as a top defender. If Ward made 30 tackles no misses - not saying that is the case - but doesn't hardly get a mention does that makes his contribution any less valid than a player who makes two breaks?

For what its worth I never heard JJB's named mentioned and the only Sinfield got mentioned was the interception try and the goal kicking does that mean both had poor games?

Thought McGuire had an excellent game, couple of good tries, an assist for Singleton and all round good attacking display. Briscoe went well and JJB ran hard and stuck his nose through the line a couple of times. Kylie looked to make the best yardage from the forwards although he obviously had limited game time, while JP will have to be managed a lot better regarding his game time or his displays will become less and less potent, he seemed to get pushed backwards on too many occasions today. Kalllum always looks classy given space to run but he won't have this much space in the majority of games. Wouldn't say anyone had a stinker, but we need to defend better as a team in future.
