| Quote ="dixie"I think you have to give finishing in the top 2 the importance it deserves. The facts speak for themselves. In the top 8 system no team has got to the final from outside the top 2, even if Leeds and Saints have been clearly the best sides during the system. I can see why a lot of Leeds fans wouldn't be as worried about top 2 placing, given that they won't finish in top two but are 3 times in a row champions and still have best side on paper capable of winning anywhere.
And don't you forget that the mighty Bulls won from 3rd !
'"
Who said finishing in the top 2 was not important, I did say it was important but less vital than under the 8 team system, that is all.
We have only had one year under the 8 team system and while the GF was contested by the top two sides last year, Leeds & Saints, they were by far the best two sides throughout the second half of the season BUT the Catalans made the semi from 8th because of a good run of late season form and the new system being slightly less favourable to the top two sides.
The long & short of it is, if you finish in the top 2 and lose week 1 then you suddenly have quite a fight on your hands!

| I change my mind.
Wigan are the biggest threat if today is anything to go by. St Helens only just hang on and Wigan never got out of third gear. It’ll be scary when they do in the play offs

| Quote ="Odemwingie"A top 5 has now been slightly established for this season but which of those most worries you? Which one do you leat want to play come play-off time? Which one will most likely take your title away? Maybe none of them worry you?
Wigan - Top of the league, best team (so far) this season. Scoring points for fun and playing some great stuff. May come and bite you on the bum for that result in the CC
Wire - At full strength an amazing team on paper. Current CC holders. Very organised under your ex coach.
Saints - May want revenger for tha last few years. Players coming back at the end of the year.
Hull - Underdogs, they have some great players and are finding some form. Tricky game as it could be an away game in the play-offs which would be very tough if they have a full team out.
Personally from a Wigan point of view I am just as worried about Leeds come play-off time as anyone else, even if they finish ouitside of the top 4. Your play-off record away from home is shocking and ours is great but you could pull a result out of anywhere.
I think this could be the most exciting play-off series ever with the 5 biggest clubs all at the top of the league.'"
The team that is the biggest threat to Leeds is Leeds. On their day Leeds are unbeatable and on form, I would back them against any other SL team. However it does depend on which Leeds team turns up!

I loved the back handed compliment about how great Saints must have been to beat the mighty Wigan. Same tone that was used when we beat them in the cup the other week. Maybe, just maybe, the two teams that have cinsistently won things over the last five years can beat this all conquering new Wigan team that have won nowt yet because when it comes to the crunch they're still better than Wigan.

We went away to the goons with 8 players unavailable through injury.
Lomax, Gardner, Soliola, Wheeler, Dean, Eastmond, Wilkin and Faasavalu - all things considered a remarkable victory.

You are absolutely right, you were brilliant, and deserve a lot more credit than you are getting.
I doubt we would have managed it, going there.
But as for the thread, this weekend highlighted exactly which teams are the biggest threat to Leeds, and have been the majority of answers throughout the many pages. The answer is Saints, and Leeds themselves.
I just don't see Wigan as a threat, as I just don't think they have the players to go the whole haul. And although Warrington have technically the better coach, i just think they have too many players of limited ability to win a championship.

I think that the main difference between Leeds and Saints is that they are a team who have a set pattern and players know exactly what they do, and their play is very structured. When one player is out, another may not be of the same quality, but because of the structure they may not miss them so much.
Leeds on the other hand play to very little structure, and rely on the brilliance of some individual players to win games. When those players don't fire, or the plays don't come off, then it leave little to fall back on.
When we get to the business end we seem a lot more structured, and seem to grind teams down, but during the main season we seem to go out there and play more off the cuff.

I was been sarcastic.
On a more serious note I’ve been impressed with Saints in their wins against Leeds and Wigan this year. The way your players have executed Potters game plan in both them games were world class.
Wigan have a lack of leadership I feel. How many captain do their have again?

Five but only four of them played yesterday so it was predictable that they would struggle against a cobbled together St Helens side. Fantastic game to watch as a neutral though.
At the end of the day this is the same Wigan squad that has achieved nothing consistently over the recent seasons and while they appear much improved under Maguire the real test of that is yet to come.

I'd agree with this - although it could also be argued that their first real test (ie in a knockout situation against a top side) was against us in the CC. When they were found wanting.

yet according to Clarkey it was the performance of the season from the perennially successful Saints to even be able to live with the perennially unsuccessful Wigan, let alone manage to beat them.
Great game though.

To be fair, I think it was our performance of the season in the circumstances, Leeds at home a close second (in similar circumstances!)

I was surprised to see them take the two early against the Saints to open their account yesterday. In those conditions it was unlikely to be a low scoring game (as opposed to the Headingley encounter you mention, where that could well be the conditions on GF night) When teams opt to take the two in that circumstance I see it as a lack of confidence and a lift to the defending team.

I think they lost it there. The lift to the Saints team and fans was immense, showed a real lack of confidence in the Wigan side, like they did against you in the CC (conditions may have played a part in that though)
