Smith clearly states yesterday evening, that had Webb gone back to the play the ball before making his run, then he would have been fine. But as he didn't then he was offside.

There is nothing about interpretation in the rule book. You sound like Stevo and his momentum rule there. You are offside or not.

You repeat again the ref was not wrong last night. Again agreeing with you on it. Therfore if the ref does not pull penalty for the example I gave above, then he would be wrong on that occassion.

If Webb had attempted to get back rather than hanging around in the Bradford defensive line not even looking like he was trying to get back I doubt the officials would even have looked at it.

You must accept that many times in a game, a kick comes in with only the fullback and winger been back. Therefore when the fullback takes the tackle the winger will always run from the play the ball?

On less occassions the winger will make a break and pass to one of his players coming back. But it will happen, and can't be debated on. Might not happen Monday, but I will be watching, and sometime it will happen. That is the same scenario we are talking on as last night.

Infact if I was a gambling man, I would bet it happens in Ian Smiths next gaem.

But forwards coming back 40 metres from a kick in the example I gave on the other page, is a lot further, and there will be occurances where a pass is made to them from a back making the break.

I await your consistent comments on those incidents when they happen.

MM refs decisions were wrong.

Last night they were right. No payback at all.

I'd have to say it does matter. Without reviewable evidence the chance of understanding and interpreting any incidents correctly will be severely impaired.

Newton took out/ ran a defensive block in front of the Bradford kicker that led to Bradford's winning try. I'd take the view that was a penalisable offence. Had Newton's run been made North - South it would have been different but he didn't so I'd interpret that as an obstruction.

Well we WAS robbed at MM, but 2 wrongs dont make a right & the MM decision was so obviously a mistake, whereas the Video ref & official last night had a chance to make the right decision & they seemed determined to make us Bulls win & give 50/50 calls to us.

Its ok by me as a supporter, but it makes our sport a bit of a joke if we have to depend on Referee decisions in order to have "talking points".

Everyone excluding the player playing the ball and the acting half back, as he would have been playing the ball he would never have been offside in those occasions

Webb was not playing the ball or acting half back and as a result offside

Tvoc and King Monkey are right. Outstanding spot by Ian Smith, well done the officials on that one. I'd argue with KM though that Webb is offside until he gets behind the play the ball. I don't buy any of the 'attempting to get back' business. You're either offside or you're not. Webb was out of the play, until the next play the ball, which he would have been able to get behind.
I cannot remember any occurence of someone coming from infront of their own play the ball to support, although I'm sure it's probably happened on rare occasions. It can only happen in 2 sitiuations (mostly).

1. As last night, support runner goes through, doesn't recieve it, starts infront of his own play the ball.

2. Fullback returns kick and is tackled. Winger picks up from dummy half and breaks the line. Players that have failed to retreat onside support.

(Remember that it's different if a fullback or winger breaks the line straight from a kick)

I've just finished watching The Sharks V The Raiders from Saturday's games in the NRL via Setanta. Not once did a player on kick return or after tackle one pass the ball to a retreating forward who hadn't got back behind where the PTB took place.
