| With all the talk of great football teams and whether Leeds United were one or not, it is difficult to define a great side. I just wonder whether it should be based on whether a side on the European Cup, when it was a cup between the best sides in each country. So of course you would have to include Liverpool in this, Man United, then Nottingham Forest for three season the best team in the UK and possible Europe and Aston Villa. This would suggest on this model Leeds United were a good side but not a great one. But these are just my thoughts.

The question here is Leeds a big club - the Revie side was a great team and has that given Leeds Utd fans an inflated opinion of how big the club is?

REgarding Leeds. I think they were a great team, who probably didn't win as much as they should have done when they were a dominant side.
IMO Forest are the opposite. They have won 1 league title in their history, and the European success was on the back of that. Good for a short period and made the most of it. I don't think there will ever be a club who can match Forests record of having more European titles than Domestic ones.
Leeds are still a reasonable sized club, and have the potential to be bigger than half the teams in the Premiership due to location, reputation and infrastructure. HOwever, the club would seriously need to get its $hit together for that to happen, and it doesn't look like happening soon

| I said the first 3 fixtures at Elland road at the start of the 1970-71 season was over 47000 the national newspapers commented 'after the FA cup final when they outplayed Chelsea completely they lost but gained a lot of goodwill and it looks like they won a crowd' The first 3 fixtures that's what I said and I don't know anyone called Maurice .I also said I " bet they averaged more than Chelsea the previous season being 1969 70 , I said " I bet " not stated definate. so Oink your way back to the East Anglia with your oinking dialect .

You show me the figures where Leeds drew crowds of 47,000 at Elland Rd - it could not hold 47,000 the scratching shed only had capacity for about 5k.

there was a 6th round replay in march 1967 the official attendance was just short of 58000 ground record attendance I was there. they played Glasgow Celtic in the semi final European cup 50000 there have been numerous attendances over 47000,I haven't got those figures to hand right now ,but surely the 1967 record attendance of well over 57000 should do for you .You are not denying that are you?

| Keep getting drawn in by this thread. See there has been recent comments and think it might be some info on our squad, only to find a load of arguing about wendyball.

I can make it about the Rhinos' squad...
I heard that JP was in the crowd at the game against the mackems that the dispute is partly based around. Does that make it acceptable to both sides? ![Very Happy icon_biggrin.gif](//www.rlfans.com/images/smilies//icon_biggrin.gif)

| A long-ago 58k attendance doesn't make LUFC a sleeping giant. Among clubs to have surpassed it are Everton, Spurs, Sunderland, Charlton, both Sheffield sides, Bolton, Hudds, Birmingham, four from the west midlands in Villa, Wolves, Birmingham and WBA, also Blackburn and Cardiff. Oh, and Newcastle whose current attendances aren't a million miles away. I've omitted the more obvious clubs who've also topped it.
That said, Leeds did enjoy a prolonged period of excellence when money wasn't the over-riding factor that ensures they remain a famous club over forty years on.

Ah, fair enough. I confess I skipped a fair bit of the footy chat. 1957's before my time but I'm pretty sure that the test v Australia in 1978 was accredited with a crowd of over 32k. I'd have sworn that the crowd for the CC quarter final against Northern a couple of months previously was larger still - although, with a breathtaking disregard for the inland rev, this figure was given as only 18k.
