Waddell was quite unusual as he came from out of the blue from oldham,if my memory is correct . I believe he signed for them from union.

I always remembered that Moriarty hit though as an elbow. Perhaps I was just being biased at the time.

Never thought he was that good for us. i cant remember the Moriarty incident TBH. He did contribute more than slammin' Sam Backo ever did however !

It was an elbow, fortunately we don't see that in the pro game anymore, but Manning's was the modern equivalent in my view.

Harvey Howard apparently did start life on the wing. We signed him from Widnes, where he was a prop. As far as I know, when he left Leeds he went onto play for the now defunct Western Suburbs (Magpies).

Just checked Wikipedia, I'd completely forgotten about him playing for Wigan then coaching Hull KR

There's a general opinion that the game now is much faster than 'back in day'. Against that, about 25 years ago, the players look quick, quick distribution etc. The game doesn't look any different in it's purest form (omitting fashion changes, hair cuts etc).

I remember Doug Laughton was the Widnes coach at the time and he refused to appear with Moriarty at the disciplinary it was so bad.

Hughie Waddell was teetotal which must have endeared him to the Stoggies and Town Hall Tavern cliques at Leeds in thosedays
