| Quote ="LFCPatriotRhino"A feller around Swarcliffe called Bod, always pished but happy nontheless, hes been around for years and even has his own facebook group
I can remember walking down Stanks Drive in the eighties and coming across a traffic jam like something off the M25. As i got to the front of the jam there was Bod stood in the middle of the road "sword Fencing" a double decker bus like one of the 3 musketeers. There were about thirty people on the bus but nobody fancied getting off to confront Bod. This was when the substance of choice was glue and Bod never went anywhere without his large bag of Evo-Stick. He'll probably outlive us all !

Sounds like him but he was harmless really!

That's what I thought last time I saw him, sadly according to his facebook page it appears he died sometime in the last few days. For real this time apparently aswell!

See him at the bus stop near us sometimes, attempting to control the buses with his powers.
He possesses probably the most powerful odour I've ever encountered from another human being.

Curly hair and a dodgy tash. He was a nice chap who also became town crier for Leeds. His best line one Christmas time was "It's FREEZING, even with TWO pairs of tights on!"
The chap who sat outside Lewis' for donkey's years selling the Evening Post who used to shout "Eeeeedie Po" (think he's been mentioned already)
I don't think anyone has mentioned Mr Wavy-man (as we christened him). He was some kind of religious type who would walk everywhere, all over Leeds in just his monks clothing (tied at the waist with white rope, IIRC). No shoes, but did wear sandals in all weathers, always smiled, always waved. Used to see him all over the place.

I think we should have a statue made of him to replace the barrel man outside the St Johns centre. More people probably know Fat Les more than the barrel man. Mind you I’m sure someone will have some knowledge on why the barrel man is there. If not I’m in town later and will do some reaserch myself!

I think Barrel Man is a statue of a brewer from Dortmund (hence the statue is in Dortmund Square), Leeds' twin town.

I wonder if we ever sent them a statue in return. If not then Fat les can be it!
On another note wouldn’t it be better to hold the German Market in a German square?
Would it even fit?
I want a German sausage now

He's more notorious in Bradford. Lives up in Baildon I believe, apparently he's got a real nasty streak in him!
He's become known recently as 'Jesus Man' by the younger crowd but he's always been known as 'The Mad Monk' to me. I quite often see him walking up and down the Saturday afternoon train between Leeds and Bradford Forster Square, which strikes me as cheating a little

There is a [iBoulevard de Leeds[/i in Lille (down the back of the Eurostar Station) that has a British red phone box on the corner (or at least it did have).
Lille is also twinned (tripletted?) with Leeds but I don't know if Leeds has a [iBoulevard de Lille[/i
Edit ... the phone box appears to have been removed. (just looked at Google Streetview)

| Does anyone know anything about (and I have christened him this) The Bird Man of Leeds? I see him near our office on Whitehall Quay all the time but I have seen him in and around all of Leeds city centre. He is maybe 50ish, leather jacket, bandanna and always pulling a bag behind him. He basically wanders around everywhere feeding the birds. But he doesnt just sit there and throw bread and await them, he places the bread in what would appear pre-determined spots for them to forage. he doesnt hang around and wait for them either he just buggers off to his next location

| anyone ever come across the 'im the king of sahara desert' bloke?, he usually gets on anyone of the busses around the corner in harehills from the medical museum.
he gets on the bus with his army camo trousers and sometimes jacket and token can of stella in his hand, then starts with the bus driver, and to the nearest woman or man who makes eye contact he starts his performace with them, mainly he goes upstairs on busses and sits next to the nearest woman and trys to chat them up with the line above, then says 'you can be one of my queens'
obviously quite a few of you wont need to get busses anymore due to owning cars but in his drunken state he also does it when he gets off the bus and around the bus stop to anyone who gives him any attention, not seen him in a long time but wondered wether any of you have come across him before?

According to Wikipedia Leeds is twinned with the following.
Leeds City Council has several twinning or partnership arrangements:
Brno, Czech Republic[24[25
Colombo, Sri Lanka[26
Dortmund, Germany[27
Durban, South Africa[28
Hangzhou, China[29
Lille, France[30
Louisville, United States[31
Siegen, Germany[32
It also has "strong contacts" with the following cities "for the purposes of ongoing projects"
Braşov, Romania
St Mary, Jamaica
Stockholm, Sweden
only reason i looked as i was asking my dad as i knew that it was twinned with a city in China but i thought it was Shanghai, sad really!!

| Anyone remember the black fella that used to walk around chapeltown road stripped to the waist in the middle of winter. He was a big bugger so wouldn't imagine many people would have been calling him a poseur or questioning his mental state.

Wasn't one of the Jeffers family was it?
When I used to work at the Jobcentre at the bottom of Eastgate there were a few members of the same family used to come in, a couple of whom were the odd penny or two short of the proverbial shilling and had a reputation for being "eccentric".

| Anyone from the Chapel Allerton area remember the "dentist"?
He was an oldish guy with a big bushy multicoloured beard and who wore sunglasses and a big anorak all the time. I was told he was a dentist prior to some sort of breakdown, and he still sat in a dentist's chair in his house. He lived, I think, on Allerton Hill.
I haven't lived in Leeds for over 25 years now, but remember that he scared me when I was very young
