| Quote ="jools"Keep telling yourself that. I’d say he’s improved massively under Watson. You say he’s not good enough but he is good enough to be picked to play in one of those positions in a top three team most weeks by one of the best coaches in the competition
He’s played 14 rounds and has the highest stats for distance covered and intensity in the league so he’s doing something right.
With many teams going for 60-80 minute hookers it’s a waste putting another out and out hooker on the bench. Having golding on our bench means if we have an injury to any single player we are instantly covered. Either golding steps straight in 1-5 or 9, 11-13 or an injury in the halves tui switches there and golding goes to FB. The props are already covered anyway. That kind of value is immense in terms of continuity and doing what our team trains to do.'"
Sorry Jools that 60 minute hooker made me laugh, this old rhymes came to mind.
She offered her honour, He honoured her offer, and all night long he was honour and offer.
Sorry for derailing.

| Quote ="christopher"It’s a real shame injuries have hampered his development, he looked like a real star in the making when he broke through.
There’s still a very good player in there but he’s currently third in the pecking order so maybe a move is the best thing for him, he seems like a really nice guy snd he deserves a bit of luck on thr injury front.
I hope he goes well for FC, we simply can’t keep all the players in a salary capped sport'"
So in two years we will be looking for a FB - both Myler/Hardaker are in decline yet we take a short term view on a very talented player. What does it say that we would prefer a serial offender to a high quality home grown player?

It says that at this point in time he is 3rd choice in that position.
Don't forget he is only on Loan and may well come back - Jack has had an absolute nightmare with injuries and you can bet your bottom dollar if we let Hardaker go to keep Jack and he gets another injury this board would be saying why have we kept him.
Also its not just about us, Jack wants to be playing he's not going to stay around being back up for two years or even for the rest of this year, and unfortunately for Jack Hardaker and Myler right now are playing better than him

How can you tell - he has only played one game and that game he looked a lot better than anything Hardaker has shown since his return. Are we turning into Warrington - in the past we have always backed our younger players and that proved very successful why has the policy changed?

Hardaker has been pretty good.
We have also let a lot of young players go, even Jack himself forced Golding out of his position and had to move on.
Jack has looked ok in the few games he’s played this year but then was injured, again.
Turning into Warrington? Just look at the young players we do have in the squad, we’re hardly shunning home grown players in a big way.
Hull only have until next week to trigger the option of signing him thst might not happen and he is still a Leeds player. The big question for Jack is can he stay fit for any length of time, he simply hasn’t managed that in 3 or more years for us. I hope for his sake he can.

JJB had a similar injury record but we didn't palm him off and that turned out OK. We might well have young players in the squad but the likes of Thompson, Donaldson, Dwyer, Hardaker etc are getting picked now most weeks. How many young players are actually getting picked especially in the backs? Newman is suspended so we play Martin in the centre - hardly giving a young player a chance?

What salary was JJB on when he was injured? I bet not the same as Jack. and How many games had he played in his first 5 years?
I think you clearly have an issue with the Hardaker signing - which is fine that's your opinion but Id say Hardaker is the better player and again Jack is on Loan it's not made permanent just yet so he may well be back with us at some point.
I don't particularly want Jack to leave as I think he has massive potential but the fact is he has been in the first team squad for 5 years and has only played 80 games.

| I listened to a podcast a few weeks ago with Craig Harrison and
Some other herberts who could talk a glass eye to sleep.
Harrison was talking in generic terms about A coach who has players on big
Contracts that he can’t shift but is determined to make changes and therefore looks at moving on other players he values more highly.
You didn’t need to be Sherlock Holmes to guess who he might be talking about.
For next year, we will have lost Mellor, broadbent, and Bodene.
I’d also expect Briscoe and Dwyer to go. IF we also lost Walker and Sutcliffe with likely Zak and Sangerre coming in then we should still have a fair bit of cap to play with.

Content with continually picking up players that are not good enough for Leeds!
What do you expect?
Sutty will tighten things up for them....

Yes but difference is we haven’t been leaking that amount of points like Hull have, thats two 50 + point drubbings in 2 weeks

To be fair to them they’ve got 12 missing. Last week with 5 on debut they jagged a derby win. They will have been drained emotionally and Wigan’s pace in the back 3 is exceptional.
Plus some of Fc’s
Older players are not very good anymore. There are similarities with us but think we are better placed for next year at the moment.
Still ahead of us in the table in 5th which emphasises how many average to poor teams are in SL

Me too. You can’t play any of the top 3 with 1 prop, no halves and plenty of other injuries and issues

| We've been complaining about how the 'rebuild' is going on forever. We can't be always looking to two years to the future when Walker might be the real deal and Hardaker and Myler are gone. If we keep thinking that way we'll always be two years away.
The fact we're up to the cap tells us that some awful decisions have been made with respect to contracts, as even if everyone was fully fit we're way behind Sts. We need to strengthen where we're weak - notably prop - and if that means losing some players due to the cap sobeit. We'll have to do this more than perhaps we'd like because there are some players who must be on a lot more than they could get elsewhere and so won't move.

I understand the comparison with JJB, but they aren't like-for-like. JJB's game wasn't based on speed. His injuries, if I remember correctly, we're mainly to his legs. But it didn't have a huge impact on his strengths of work rate and power. Walker's game is based on speed and elusiveness. The injuries are more likely to have impacted on this. Also, the club hasn't just palmed Walker off. They've supported him through his injuries, as they should, and sent him out on loan at a time when he isn't playing for us.
Personally, I want Leeds to be back at the top challenging for trophies. A part of doing that is having a full back who can exploit broken fields and link play. For me, Walker isn't that player. The sentiment of him being one of our own shouldn't overrule what's best for the team to progress

Also Everyone says that about JJB but most of his injuries were when he was academy A team player, once he broke through into first team he was pretty consistently injury free bar obe bad one towards the end of his career.
Walker is far more injury prone than JJB ever was.

| Also Walker's injuries have happened after he had already established himself as our first choice full back and got a contract upgrade. He has become a more expensive bit of salary cap than JJB was at that stage of his career.
I don't think anyone wants to lose Walker if it were possible to keep him but the salary cap makes managing a squad so difficult that his retention given his injury record is sadly really difficult now.

I’d suspect he’s not even above the mid earners in the squad in terms of salary. One thing that this does bring to light, though, is how awful our recruitment is. We now have 3 full back in the squad. We’ve been consistently getting things wrong for approaching ten years.

To be fair Myler has only become a full back because of Walkers injury record.

True that. He was signed as McGuire’s replacement!
Hardaker covers whole backline and we couldn’t let an opportunity like that slip when he became available unexpectedly…..

I understood, perhaps wrongly, that the right to buy clause expired imminently (this week?). After that time, there was no automatic right, in that we (and Jack of course) would need to agree, or not. Is this right?
