For those who are advocating signing Joel "Mongrel" Monaghan, can you tell me how that would help the "desparate for a run in the first team" Kallum Watkins?

How do we find out if our own top Junior talent can make it if we don't give them a chance?

Do you not have 2 centres in the team? Where do you think Watkins is going to get his game time currently bearing in mind we have 2 centres there now?

Well, I'd say that it would be as a replacement for Senior who will play part of the season as an impact second rower and in the centres when BMD decides that Watkins isn't ready or needs a rest.

The same doesn't apply to Delaney, who would not be an impact second rower and isn't as strong as the other workhorses in front of him (Kirke not included).

FWIW this highlights the lack of need for Delaney IMO, who was the real pointless signing.

Personally, I hope we don't sign him nor any other SL club.
There seems to be a perception that no matter what you get up to in Oz, there will always be a place for you in SL.
Bird, Carney & probably others come immediately to mind.
The entire game needs to give out the same strong message that inapprpriate behaviour won't be tolerated.
I also believe that whoever took & distributed the pictures should be punished too.

My own opinion is that people need to wake up to the fact that players have a life outside of the game also, regardless of how you view that.

I think the Aussies have gone way too overboard over the last 12 months with their players.

You didn't make a point about Hauraki, i wasn't having a go at you about it, just asking the question. Because you gave the issue of signing Monaghan would be an issue for Watkins game time, because you are assuming Senior would be moved to second row. But yet if we do that Senior would then be holding back game time of Clarkson, Pitts, Stewart, and then if Hauraki comes also we have the same issue doubled.

I agree with you that sl should not be a haven for nrl bad boys like Greg bird. He glassed his own mrs. How he's not in jail al never know. what Rex did is stupid and pretty gross but was a drunk prank. It's dumb as but not in the same league to what bird did in my opinion.

You've lost me a bit there. Senior will / should spend some of next season in the second row, let's say half the season. This would mean that half the season would be free for someone else to play there.

If we sign Hauraki, he will play there for the full season (assuming he is selected) which would further reduce the opportunity for Clarkson, Pitts and Stewart, etc.

The best scenario would be sign neither Monaghan or Hauraki and give the kids a go, but I suspect that the Hauraki deal has already been done.

I'd agree with you if drunken antics were the exception rather than the norm in Oz, but it seems to me that there is a news story every week down under where players have been found assaulting people, trashing hotel rooms, beating up people etc etc.
I'm no angel but these guys need to grasp the fact that they are role models & whatever they do will be reported.
It's tough but it goes with the territory, harms the game's image & adversely affects all the good guys who don't misbehave.

surely the best scenario would be get someone to take Delaney of our hands, sign Monaghan and not sing Hauraki.

Go into next season with Watkins and Monaghan as our first choice centres, Keith filling in as and when at 2nd row and centre.

Clarkson, Pitts and Stewart get a few more games this season than last, and step up next season to replace as we lose Ali and Kylie.

Delaney has two years left on his contract, which would need to be paid off if we were to try ot get rid of him. This would count on the salary cap.

Getting rid of Delaney is not viable so we need to make best use of him.

There is no need to sign anyone else, other than coaching staff. With the right coaching staff on board, there is no reason why we can't win SL in 2011 with the current squad we have.

The thought of a Monaghan/Delaney combination keeping our centre spots tied up for years is depressing beyond belief. If we did sign Monaghan I'd hope Watklins would want to leave.

As ever when he is a possible signing, people are talking up Monaghan as better than anybody in SL. I may be seen as a naysayer here, but IMO he's actually very overrated. In the NSW backline (admittedly not alone) he has looked decidedly second rate against Queensland. He's also a bit like Matt King - seems like a winger trapped in a centre's body. I doubt very much he'd have the same impact as Jamie Lyon. Better than Delaney for sure, but then that's not saying much.
