Hall's technique is very unorthodox, and I doubt you would find it in any coaching manual, but it works for him, and when added to his height means that 9/10 he can take the high bomb befroe anyone else can get a hand to it.

It is more customary to catch the ball with a cradle around face height. Donald is not the tallest winger, so will get beaten by someone with a decent jump, who is just there to get something on the ball.

I don't really think Matt was critisizing the player, more that he was commenting that he isn't as comfortable trying to go in at the right corner as he is with the left.

That's not unreasonable comment. On the left he'd have done it all instinctively, on Saturday he had to think more and work more to score, he probably took a fraction of a second longer and that fraction of a second gave the opposition a sniff of a chance to stop him but he still made it.

But Donald would do a lot better if he actually made an effort to jump himself. And actually judge the ball a lot better.

His actual technique is not that bad. When nobody challenges him, he takes cleanly. He wimps out though when challenged by others.

I don't know what Donald specifically did wrong, nothing as far as I could tell, but had he been given the ball in the same situation on the other side I don't think the defender would have got a hand on him. Well done to him for getting the ball down (he did very well in the end to keep his right foot in the air above the touchline, but I still maintain he looks far from comfortable squeezing in at the right hand corner, and saturday is far from the first time I've been given this impression.

Donald has reached heights as a winger that Smith hasn't gotten remotely near. Hall and Smith were in a battle for a wing spot last year and this year Hall is probably the best winger in the competition.

Smith is a quality utility back. There are better out and out wingers on our books.

Did Mclennan consider Smith our best winger last year? No, he took a long time to decide between him and Hall.
