| BTW, it says a lot about the current sad state of SL backs when you could virtually pick the entire Widnes backline from that day for England, and they were way behind Wigan as a group. Tait, Fallon and Schofield of Leeds would also be ahead of anyone today.

| Anybody that thinks individual player contracts in League are a bad thing have David Hulme to thank (in part) for their introduction. He argued to anyone who would listen that while clearly it's a team game not all players within a team are equal indeed some deserved to be more equal than others.
He won that argument as the game moved away from the basic pay structure (as described in the betting scandal thread) to the one we see today with high profile players scooping up the lions share and leaving the scraps for the younger lads to fight over especially so now that we're also in a salary capped period for the game.

At the heart of what I recall as being pretty much the nastiest pack I've ever seen. Including the Leeds '99 one. It did, however, have some good ball players (Hulme, Eyres and Holliday) in it. But they could be pretty nasty too. Why, oh why was Richie Eyres so rubbish for us? Never understood how that happened.

You know me ..... nothing's ever original.
Not animal farm though (I'm unfamiliar with that book) my inspiration this time was an alledged conversation between Roger Taylor and Freddie Mercury when comparing hotel rooms. 'They're all equal dear only some are more equal than others.' I'll let you determine who was delivering the line at the time.
Perhaps it was he that was quoting Orwell?

Some people say he was never the same after the Wembley red.
But it's far simpler, he never put a shift in for us. At the same time he was tossing it off for us he was still playing for GB and was still one of their poster boys.
Why oh why indeed.

Eyres joins Basnett, O'Neill and Tait as players from around that era who were great for Widnes but not so great for us. But Leeds of that time could probably have signed Sorenson and Tamati and turned them soft.

It links in quite well I guess. Not long before Tait gave Chariots the outside Holroyd had a kick in front of us to take Leeds into the lead in the match. I had this massive feeling that if he'd have kicked it, and Leeds went ahead for the first time, that we'd have won. But he didn't, and somehow I knew right there that it wasn't our day.

| Dixon was a tremendous player, much underrated. Not many forwards around these days who could break then line like he could. His ability never really got the credit he deserved IMO. He was immense for Halifax during his time there.

Phil McKenzie was a favourite of mine, even though he played for Widnes. Class act.

I never realised Micron Video were still selling the DVDs from games of that era when Widnes had the likes of Sorensen, Grima, Koloto, Moriarty etc. Now, can I convince myself it's worth getting the one from 1988(?) where Moriarty gets sent off for flattening Hugh Waddell...?

I think that would be from this game:
That's Paul Hulme doing the classic 'starfish' impression flat on his back (Kevin Dick had that one perfected - we used to score it out of ten whenever he brought it out of the locker.)
Dixon got a one match ban for that and Des Lynam uttered the immortal line: 'If this had been a football league game, there would have been a major inquiry.'
Well it wasn't Des so button it.
The referee was Brian Galtress from Bradford so little wonder it got slightly out of hand. At least this time he saw the punch from close quarters. Penalty count ended 16 - 4 against Leeds (9 - 1 in the second half) with Widnes fielding a pack of angels in the shape of Grima, McKenzie, Faimalo (replaced by Sorenson), Eyres, Koloto and Paul Hulme.

The highlights can be found on youtube. It was a Scrumdown game. They have a good angle from directly behind the sticks at the scoreboard end, and it really brings home what a cowardly and evil 'tackle' it was.

| It's the worst 'tackle' I've ever seen live. Absolutely no intent other than to ram his elbow into Waddell's face.
