| Quote ="FlexWheeler"It’s a joke argument anyway. Context matters. Saints beat a sh*t Salford that couldn’t believe their luck to be in the final, abit like us, got luckier than I’ve ever seen at the end against wigan, Catalans team with no grand final pedigree and then for us see Salford.
My point is it’s not like they’re having to overcome a formidable adversary who’s their match each time. It’s a piece of mickey. It’s not like in football where Man City are winning it each year but they’re setting records and new benchmarks (100+ points etc). It’s almost like musical chairs and it’s fallen that saints are basically the only top team left standing who haven’t been poop / in disarray. Their fans will think they’re some kind of seminal team
and the record books will show what they’ll show but they won’t be remembered as such because they’re just vanilla, but one that’s better than everyone else who is unflavoured. There’s nothing memorable in a wider context, just an efficient team doing efficient things. And that’s all it takes to win our competition now. That’s my frustration. It’s a levelling down. Best of a bad bunch. I’ll no doubt get slaughtered.'"
Maybe just pack it then. It's obvious you no longer have any time for the sport.

| Even the 2006 team only had to get past Hull in the GF.
This year we did them a massive favour by putting Wigan out, who looked to have the better of them in the regular season

| A valiant effort by Leeds. At least they stuck at it for the 80. Saints are the better side if I’m been honest although the ref was poor on the offsides today. I was disappointed in that aspect. A few decisions went against us but overall they tried. If we had been offered a spot in the grand final 4 months ago I would have taken it as I didn’t see it. Just need to recruit a few players now.

| Fair play to Saints. Started fast and stayed relentless. Definitely light at the end of the tunnel for Leeds though. Stuck at it and played some good rugby in patches. Really missed Sezer's kicking game as well as the cutting edge the likes of Newman and Fusitua would have provided, but never gave in. We've come a long, long way in a few months. Really looking forward to see what Rohan can do with a full pre-season and some new blood. Onwards and upwards.

| Just to add. I thought Cameron Smith was poor tonight. Looked slow and lacked invention. Think it would have been a lot closer or even a win with Newman, Fusi and Sezer playing. We just lacked a bit of grunt. Thought Bentley went well. A pretty clean game overall.

| Best team won against a gritty but disorganised attacking performance by Leeds.
Lack of size up front and no creativity didn`t help.
Leeming in the halves to start and Smith at 13 for me would have been a better option and I think Smith eluded to it at the end.
One thing I did notice is that the only Saints player who mentioned how well Leeds played was Makinson.
Top bloke who was one of only 2 players who applauded the Southstand before it closed to a new stand.
Very gracious unlike the coach and other players if I remember rightly.
Time to reflect get some new players in and let`s see what happens next year.

I don’t get why you feel the need to come on another board and make those kind of comments? If you think St Helens are the greatest club or most successful club or whatever else then fair play to you. I don’t agree, I don’t even think this is the best St Helens side of the last 15 years, let alone the best side ever.
I assume you’ve been to St Helens, there is literally nothing to do but play rugby league, it is a god awful place. Despite that and the fact St Helens have been champions for 4 years on the bounce. They don’t sell out, don’t even have the highest average attendance for gods sake. If you haven’t been to Leeds there are numerous other attractions and sports to compete with for players and fans. Despite that, despite the fact Leeds have been awful for a number of years they still have the highest average attendance, they still produce numerous high quality players and despite being fighting relegation half way through the season they got to Old Trafford and have St Helens a decent game.
Well done on winning, well deserved. Just try and have a little bit more class about yourself when you come onto another teams board and post about it.

| Congratulations to St Helens, well deserved victory and they are clearly the benchmark. We’ve got a lot to be proud about, and with a different bounce of the ball or a bit more luck with officials decisions and it could have been a different result.
One thing is certain, we finished the season a lot better than we started it, and we have a great platform to kick on from here. We need a couple more players this close season, and then some real grunt up front and a game breaker in the back row next close season and we will be right back up there.
We’ve come a long way in the last 6 months, rest up lads you’ve a big season next year.

Makinson's antics at the final whistle in front of the Leeds fans were classless, whatever he said after the game. Those Leeds fans throwing bottles were even worse

Didn`t pick up on that.
What did he do?
But if that`s what losing means we should receive a hefty fine for throwing bottles..
Did Catalans get fined when they did the same against us btw?

This is the best team of the super league era.. saints have had better players for sure. But the consistency of effort of this saints team is unrivaled
I thought we would win today. Even at half time I was confident. Was waiting for that dip but they were too good.

I agree. We’ve done really well of late under Smith but as you say the gap is still huge. They are better across the park and in some positions the gap is massive.
They have far more quality than anyone else.
Sadly I agree with flex wheeler, with welsby , Dodd and Lomax they can continue to dominate. Each club bar Saints have had a period or many periods of being poor. They haven’t and remain way ahead.
Although we never stopped trying we played some fairly dumb stuff at times.
Recruitment is now key.

He ran the ball out at the end but went the length of the dead ball line goading the Leeds fans. People should not throw plastic bottles but he triggered it

No way! The competition is nowhere near the standard it was. Saints had far better sides in those 5 losing GFs but we were loads better and so were Wigan, Hull, Wire etc. Maybe the NRL salary cap is an issue so the only NRL players we get now are in decline or had disciplinary issues in Oz. Saints circa 2006 would pish all over that current team.

| St Helens were the better side. While we really missed Sezer and the missing outside backs it showed some of our fundamental issues, particularly with respect to lack of beef up front.
Plenty to build on for next season and a number of signings expected in the near future. Fingers crossed the likes of Newman and Fusitu'a play far more games as well. I wouldn't be surprised if our style of play changes again as this year Smith has been managing a team deficient in some key areas even at full strength.

Oh, come on. Saints had far better teams when we kept beating them - very comforting opinion if you're a Leeds fan. Historical comparisons are completely bogus anyway. Sport is ever changing and you can't really compare sides more than a decade apart. They were both great - leave it at that. What I do find comical is why people are so obsessed with the best side in Super League history. Rugby League had a long and proud history before 1996 and the Wigan sides of the late 80's and 90's truly stand alone.

Comparing eras is always very difficult. The sports science in modern RL means that I think most teams from over 10 years ago couldn’t live with the intensity the game has now been played with. Whilst other eras have other attributes which define them, this Saints team embodies “intensity”, and is effectively era defining (for better or worse). Teams in the early 2000s may be considered more skilful, but had to do far less to strip defenders, and create opportunities. I’m very excited to get Dodd back into the team for next year, our average points score before good Friday was 12 points higher than after Dodd was injured.
It’s definitely true that consistently losing our best to Aus, as well as not even being in the conversation for any of the top NRL players coming over defines where we are as a competition, but that shouldn’t take away from Saints doing 4 in a row, or Leeds doing 3 in a row before us.

Maybe it's time the sport did away with the salary cap. It does seem with that we've sacrificed the absolute star quality of the likes of Lyon & Lauititi for a system that props up clubs who still don't compete at the top end of the comp.

| These sorts of comparisons are a bit pointless. The record books will show Sts having won most titles in a row. Hopefully that run ends this year, but you can only beat what's in front of you and its not Sts fault that the rest of SL has fallen so far behind. We all play to the same cap, so it all comes back to recruitment and coaching at the likes of Leeds and Wigan simply not being good enough.
It looks as though we have finally got the coaching right but even when everyone in our squad is fit its clearly inferior to Sts in too many positions and Smith has had to make do and mend since he arrived. We've got a number of our poorer senior players leaving (Sutcliffe, Dwyer, Thompson, Briscoe) and likely a few more new faces than so far announced. Whether that's enough is debateable - while we had several out St Helens with Dodd and Walmsley would be stronger as well.
