If you want specifics from Hanley in Leeds finals I'm sure I could find some '" I've only been asking for the last two pages.

Ray Batten was before my time, but regarding the other 2, you have got it spot on.
My favourite number 13 though goes to Dave Heron

| Quote ="DHM"More than four feet and less than two feet from a touch judge was classed as being in their "blind side". If you weren't between 2 and 4 feet from the flag waver you could do almost anything without being seen. Then there would be the (usually once per match per touchie) "eagle eye" spot - where they would come running from the most impossible distance onto the pitch as fast as their knobbly kneed legs would carry them waving their flag like one of the railway children. No matter how murky the light on a late Sunday afternoon, how far away or how many players were in the way they would always spot "something" nobody else in the ground had seen.'"
I remember a group of fans orchestrating an intervention by a nearby touch judge by booing and swearing about a non-existent punch. I think it was during a Yorks cup game at Batley. Hard to say who was the more baffled, the ref and supposed perpetrator.

Who does number two work for?
I'm sure I could find some Hanley examples, just as I did from a crucial semi-final in order to reach one of those finals, just as I could for Sinfield likewise.
Both have been highly influential players for the club in their respective careers.
Which one rates higher (in context of the poll in question) is a matter of personal opinion given the only qualifying criteria I have seen is 100 1st grade games which leaves much open to interpretation around what constitutes greatness.
Sinfield having almost four times the opportunities to impress at the club is not lost on me, neither is Hanley's overall standing in the game. That standing did not diminish when he signed for Leeds. He was taken on the '92 Tour despite an hamstring problem, he was that important to the national side that he had to go even with a slim chance of being fit for the Tests.

Now, where are Friday's stats? I can't wait to see how few carries Kirke made.

They're on their way but it's proving difficult to concentrate on them while frantically watching videos from the mid 90's

| Dave Heron did play a bit at 6 for Leeds, fairly unusually these games coming towards the end of his Headingley career before moving on to Odsal.

| Heron would have made an excellent stand off had he made the move earlier.
As far as this debate goes I'd say Hanley was even at his time at Leeds the best loose forward I've seen. But in a vote for best ever you can't ignore trophy wins, individual performances in finals, goalkicking and simple longevity. Sinfield would get my vote.
These kind of debates are always fun, but I prefer the idea that we can acknowledge more than one player per position. That's particularly the case when looking across very different eras. Eric Harris must have been some player, but how would he fare now? Billy Boston used to terrorise defences but he was in many ways a physical freak for his time. Would he be the same today? Etc etc. When I watch highlights of cup finals from the 70s some of the softness in defence and lack of fitness is astounding, but some of the skills are sublime. I wouldn't hesitate to put the likes of Holmes, Smith, Dyl and Atkinson on a wall of fame though.

| The logic being applied in selecting Sinfield means that if similar logic is applied to selecting the rest of the all-time great Leeds squad, we'll laughingly end up with Donald, Diskin, Bailey and Kirke alongside!

| I don't think you would, if you put any store in the Challenge Cup and assorted other trophies available in the past (some of which were won during periods when GB was the undisputed World Champion of RL). John Atkinson won 2 championships plus 3 challenge cups and a lot more beside. I'd say even on the basis of what they won, Atkinson would easily trump Donald. If you pardon the pun....

I remember Heron playing probably no more than half a dozen games at 6 in the later years of his career at Leeds, one in particular against Widnes at Headingley, where he totally outplayed Tony Myler (no mean feat), and thought it's a crying shame he hadn't been played at 6 for his whole career as he was an absolute natural...

If you're thinking of the scrumdown game it was Davies at 6 for Widnes but, yes, heron outplayed him.

Had they won Lance Todd trophies or Harry Sunderland trophies or other individual accolades whilst guiding their team to success you might have a point.
Actually, you do have a point with Diskin. Oh for the days of a number 9 who could leave his mark on the team like he did.

Actually, Diskin probably would be at 9 in my all time dream team, but then I don't go back as far as some. Lowes was a better player, but sadly (for us) had his best years elsewhere. I put Diskin ahead of Maskill, Shaw, Gunn, Jackson on my list.

| If you keep in mind what the "prize" is for being selected in this dream team, that's a "permanent display commemorating their greatest ever side" it would be an absolute travesty if Sinfield is not included in that display. End of story.

I suspect you're not remembering correctly and I am. It's on that Scrumdown "7 of the best" video.
However, we are both old farts so who knows.

I wouldn't be citing the Lance Todd trophy to justify the selection of a skipper who has guided the team to 4 Challenge Cup Final losses out of 4. Leroy Rivett won it in 1999 but at least it was accompanied with a winners medal. Having said that, I'd want Sinfield included in a greatest Leeds XIII team simply on the basis of his overall impact, influence and guidance of the team in 4 out of 5 Grand Finals... but not at the expense of a world class player like Ellery Hanley who was worth the admission price alone to watch in action.
Oh for the days of a number 9 (or in Diskin's case, a number 14 in 2009) who certainly left his mark on the club by reneging on a contract extension as soon as he'd cashed in on his testimonial wonga.

Who indeed?
If only there was an old fart on here with half his memories still intact and a scrapbook collection (with full match records) to fill in the bits temporarily mis-placed back in the late 70's, 80's and early 90's.
What an invaluable contributor he/she could prove to be at trying times such as these.
