| Quote ="tvoc"The Atkinson try in the semi at Central Park is still one of my favourite Leeds team tries albeit now only from fading memory - only 38 years ago .... really how did that happen. I can still see Steve Pitchford hit up and offload, Neil Hague dancing across field, Les Dyl arcing to the left and Atky dropped off inside streaking across the muddy mess to score under the sticks.'"
Pretty much how I remember it, except that I think it was Cookson who offloaded out of a 3 man tackle. Could easily be wrong though. Central Park, not my first game but the first one I saw that wasn't at HQ. 38 years, sheeesh! actually, thinking about it, it's 39!

| Yep, 39 it is. Would love to see the video of that game again, especially the performance of the Leeds front row Harrison, Ward and Pitchford, magnificent to a man. Re Cookson/Pitchford - I started scrap booking one day short of a month after the semi-final so I think I'd struggle to find confirmation now unless anyone else out there remembers.

| I think it was 1986 when Cliff Lyons landed a drop goal from 40 yards out, the ball was still rising as it went over the crossbar towards the old scoreboard end. Never seen a drop goal like it since

Took a tremendous amount of bottle, and character which we obviously came to see time and again down the years but it wasn't so evident up until this point. Must have been a real sinking feeling for the Saints players behind the sticks who i would guess thought he would miss too!'"
To think he was the 2nd choice kicker behind Furner for the previous rounds in the cup and only got given the job ahead of him the week before that game when we beat Saints in the league and he hit 4 from 4.

| Last home game 2003, we were getting beat 20-0 iirc by Saints and looked totally gone, but in the last 25 mins we scored 5 times and won 30-20.
The pace throughout our team 2003-5 gave us an ability to score from deep Ive not seen before or since.

| Does anyone remember Mcdermott dummying for a drop goal and then scoring V warrington in 97?
Or B Goulding missing a kick just to the side of the uprights in the last min which would have won the game in 97?

| The 19-0 win at Wigan under Doug Laughton deserves a mention. A young lad on loan from York Matt Shaw played his part and 2 Phillis Ford tries and a 70m John Bentley try made it a happy trip.
I always remember a JPS Trophy tie at Headingley in mid 80s v Wigan, which ended in a 10-4 win i think. In that game the brilliant Tony Currie took John Chicka Ferguson on the outside near South Stand and skinned him for pace. In the 2nd half Currie scored a belter to win it. That guy was some player but whenever i mention him very few people remember him.
Craig Izzard's fight with Joe Grima which nearly went into South Stand was worthy of a mention too. First time i had seen a Leeds forward stand up to Widnes rough house play in those day. We went on to beat them that day. Izzard was phenomenal that year for us.

One of the most charismatic Leeds players ever. I remember a game at Salford when he didn't play, but was on kicking tee duties. Every time he ran on the pitch, we were chanting his name louder than we'd been cheering during actual play.

| Izzard and ET - how about those two for setting the standard for overseas recruits. Two completely different types of player, but both absolutely phenomenal.
For me, ET was everything any young bloke could ever want to be (he'd definitely be my man crush).. Tough, quick, super skilful, athletic, model looks..... They don't make many like him.... Not completely perfect though, he was prone to the odd 'Ferres' moment....

IIRC Simon Irving was on kicking duties that night, banged one over Sinfield at Huddersfield like off the 'wrong' touchline for a right footer but had to retake it as the touch judges were not ready..... What? Made no difference he repeated the kick to perfection.

Another great game. Did Brett Kenny play? John Holmes certainly starred for Leeds opposite him if he did. Chicka Ferguson was also great to watch, so casual until he hit fresh air then he was gone. That was a special Wigan team that year and Leeds got over them that Saturday afternoon.

It was Steve pitchford who passed to Dyl and then onto John Atkinson. The 2 tries Atkinson scored v Bradford in quarter final in 1978 is another favourite memory from a that era.
Alan Smith coming off his wing and tackling a centre man and ball is another sight I would love to see along with Atkinson going in and out and leaving a full back for pace.

| In that semi at Wigan v saints in 1977 , Steve Pitchford headbutted the late dave chisnall and the claret was flowing. He was not too happy mr chisnall. It was a tough, gripping match in awful conditions that game, which made the Atkinson try from our half all the more special and exciting. The only try of the game.

Kenny was not playing that year, it was the year after he came over. John Holmes put Tony Currie in the gap with a piece of class play, probably the last big game he won for Leeds with a. Touch of magic. The last of a very long list. Holmes suckered a young Edwards onto him and slipped Currie through. Think I have dvd of the game somewhere.

| Mine is from 1991,moved to Leeds in 1990 from Suffolk at that time never having watched league before . Went to watch Jonathon Davies play at headingley for Widnes I think. I was hooked on the game from then and have had some fantastic times watching the rhinos/loiners since oh and I was one of those carrying Ellery off at Central Park great times!

| Agree with earlier post about des Drummond's drop at fartown.
He scored some amazing tries at Leeds in his pomp.
One more from me. Around same era , would guess about sept 1983 we played Widnes at home midweek. We had not won a game. Leeds surprisingly got stuck in and won in the end. Big Cumbrian Widnes forward Les Gorley hit Roy Dickinson 3 or 4 times. As Roy covered up from a slightly crouched position he brought an upper cut from the western terrace that smashed Gorley's nose all over the place. Both got sent off. Roy ran up the ramp with a big daft grin on his face. Gorley's legs had gone and with blood flowing was helped off by Widnes trainers and got dog's abuse from the eastern terrace.

| There was a high scoring Leeds V Leigh game at Headingley on a gloriously sunny afternoon. Some brilliant rugby and tries from both teams in the first half but alas none could be shown on Scrumdown as Leeds had a shirt sponsor's name emblazoned (YOUNGERS) and it was in breach of the TV contract.
Only time I've seen David Oxley running on his way round the pitch to tell Leeds to change kit at half-time. Leigh won with John Woods and Drummond to the fore, ended the season as Champions IIRC. Dave Hesselwood and Kevin Rayne were the Leeds players that stick in mind.

Won't have been Scrumdown. That didn't come in until 1989.
Anyway, a couple of Steve Morris ones; firstly, a cup game (JPS, I think) at Springfield Borough (not the Simpsons one), and he seemed to beat half their team on his way to score, and his final game for us at HQ, when he scored a late try to beat Hull KR, after they'd thought they'd snatched it near the end. Set up by Peter Jackson IIRC, poor lad. Such a tragic life.

| It was the 1981/82 season, John Woods scored a boat load of points under Murphy who escaped at the end of the season and arguably reawakened the Wigan juggernaut.
Point taken re Scrumdown, guess it must have been RL Action back then - Richard Madeley southern ****

| Great thread chaps.
How about the time played Widnes 4 times i think on the trot in mid 80s? Carl Gibson hat trick at Headingley. The boot throwing penalty and 2 point losd at Widnes after a fantastic Dave Heron try. John Basnett scored for Widnes. What a good winger he was until we signed him!!! The cup quarter final draw at Widnes with a last min Dave Creasser penalty to get them back to Headingley for the replay. What a battle royale the replay was! A 5-0 win in one of the hardest games i had seen. No tries scored. Tony Myler knocked Curries head off. But a win.
We lost in the semi after a replay both games at Elland Rd and another Des Drummond like try from David Laws right on HT. KRnt had Harkin sent off in 1st for a trip on Currie, we had a 12 point lead and 10 mins after HT we was 12 behind. Got a draw but lost 17-0 in replay.
Leeds really were rubbish in 80s n 90s but we had some really great individuals.

| Great posts, especially those I attended
Few from me..
I recall a midweek game vs Cas, score 8-4 I think and no tries!! Very rare!!
Away to Hull KR. Vince Fawcett coming on, and then immediately subbed for allowing them to score. Leeds won with a late Gareth Stephenson try I think
Hammering Cas on Boxing Day around 1990.
Alan Tait smashing his head against a concrete post at Doncaster early Super League. He played on!!
I have memories of being 19-2 down to Warrington with 10 minutes left, and we won 22-19 I think??
1994 Leeds 46 Sheffield 46. Ridiculous game!!!
Away at Leigh pre SL. Horrible, wet and windy played in the mud. Think Leeds scraped a late draw, but most of fans home & away huddled under stand chanting at each other no more than 20 yards apart What a dump that ground was!!!
CC semi final at Elland Road v Fev 1994 I think. Schoey interception length of field try! Wembley and the loss to Wigan followed
Francis Cummins scoring a better try than Offiah in the 1994 final. IMO of course!

the look on his face as it dissapeared was priceless
peacock running the ball in for the 1st time against bradford after he'd signed, they threw everything at him in that tackle
away game at widnes and their mascot decided to jump into the leeds end, he got out but lost his head and started paddying cos no one would hand it back

| Cliffie Lyons at Odsal put Brendon Hill on his ar$e with a sweet punch. Hill went for Cliffie and got put down cartoon style. Cliffie will be remembered for his sublime skills and guile but he was as hard as they come.
John Holmes when he filled the gap of our shocking injury crisis for one last swan song! I got is tie ups for his socks. No Idea where they are.
Gibbo and Schoey length of the field interceptions in the YCF.
The distruction of Saints at home in 04.
