| Quote ="G1"There are several things missing from the old rivalry (well not that old, but early Super League). To make up for those missing ingredients the games need to be top notch quality and they're not quite there yet.
What made the previous games special was the Bulls early Super League success. That the Bulls stole such a march on the Rhinos in the early years of SL got under the skin on the Rhionos fans, players and administrators. I also got the impression that dominating the Rhinos was almost as special for the Bulls as their success. However these games were special as we were playing catch up and victories became oh so sweet. The Darryl Powell masterclass at Headingley, the Iestyn hat trick, the Ben Walker inspired cup win at Valley Parade. When we were reaching our peak, after a short period in 2004 and 2005, the Bulls were beginning their decline.
The McDermott versus Fielden sub plot was also a joy to watch and really added spice to the fixtures. Gosh the game has become sanitised even in the last 10 years. You knew, every fixture Barrie was going to try and impose himself upon the young up and coming star and Fielden, whilst often losing the confliguration but winning the match, was not going to back down.
Finally, we all loved the off field drama. Caisley versus Hetherington. Inducement to Breach Harris' contract. It all added to the mix.
Just too many ingredients missing these days. Maybe I will be rude to Bullseye to add some spice.
You could view our three year rivalry with Saints (2007 to 2009) in the same way if not better as both teams were on a par. That has lost some it's allure without Senior slapping Gilmour and Wilkin and Graham running around throwing his teddies out of the pram.'"
I'd agree with all that. Also Leeds have lost that pre SL arrogance they once had IMO. I often remember Leeds splashing the cash every close season bringing in a raft of new signings from Australia, Rugby Union or other RL clubs and the media lapping it up. "Watch out Wigan!" was the gist of many headlines and the fans leapt on the bandwagon. The rest of the clubs in Yorkshire were often dismissed as also rans. When Northern then went on to dish out some physical (and often brutal) thrashings to the flash Loiners it was most enjoyable.
Since Leeds started bringing their own players through that element disappeared. Hopefully it'll be back once the likes of Sinfield/Burrow/McGuire/JJB/Bailey/Hall/ all retire and Leeds go back to wasting money on dubious signings
Quote ="tigertot"Cas v Leeds is the big one now. Probably on par with Boca Juniors v River Plate.'"
Funnily enough Cas vs Leeds reminds me of the Northern Vs Leeds games of the past as Cas fans with an inferiority complex see the game as far more important to them than it is to Leeds. So to Cas fans it is Boca Juniors vs River Plate.

No I don't mean between the two sets of Supporters I mean between the players.
God I don't want this derby to turn out like the Hull one were fights occur on the pitch and an overweight woman with a broken arm charges on to the pitch to launch her shoe at someone!

Let's not forget the 'crocodile clap' after the Bulls hammered us at HQ (2003?). Still makes my blood boil just thinking about Jimmy, Robbie and Henry's smug faces

| The way to get the blood back boiling for these games is to get that Russell Smith refereeing them again.

| Great bloke Russell.
Just because he played for us some Rhinos fans thought he was biased.
That tackle by Lesley on Calderwood in the 2003 Cup Final was pure gold.
Classic Russell Smith.

It was on Sinfield at Valley Parade IIRC.
Mears got done by Sonny Nickle but that was in his 'Saints' days.

You're actually being charitable to Leon there, by underselling it as being merely 'off the ball'. It was also head-high and he blindsided Sinny.
Look up 'leeds bradford challenge cup 2002' on the tube of you and jump to about 11 mins.

He's on the referee evalution team in Australia.
Although judging by the spatial awareness displayed in the Vainakolo/Calderwood incident he probably thinks he's in New Zealand.

Ouch! No need for that.
Funnily enough I missed that incident as I was away on honeymoon in Turkey. Late in the evening after the game I found an internet cafe and saw that the Bulls board had gone into meltdown, luckily my fellow Mod Asim was around to deal with it all, strangely he stopped being a Mod shortly afterwards
At least I have the 50 and 60 point thrashings to look back on in 97 and 2001.

| According to McDermott one or two of our players who were not going to make the Wakefield game are fit to play against the Bulls.
He also mentioned that there was some sickness in the camp last week and one or two might not have played but are much better now.
So it was a conspiracy afterall.

| Remember "UTU"? That went well.
Going back pre SL days, Cliffy Lyons (Leeds) and Gary Mercer (Northern) duking it out in a match when Paul Medley (Leeds) scored a belter, fist raised aloft, to seal the game.
Paul Dixon's four tries (for Leeds) at Odsal. Roy Powell's extended arm (for Northern) at Valley Parade.
Why can't sky build these games up as good as these threads? Instead of the usual idiots droning on about the usual gubbins just give us 30 mins highlights of some of the stuff mentioned in this thread. That should whet the appetite.
