In my time watching Leeds I've seen players like Alfie Langer, Trent Barrett, Matt King, Bradley Clyde, Jamie Peacock etc all have bad games.

Is this a slap in the face for our famed academy production line? Our last 2 signings can both be put firmly in the "work in progress" category and wont be judged on there first 1 or 2 seasons at the club. Is that not what the academy's there for?

That's another way of looking at it, I agree. One thing I think is certain is that it's not a short term signing; we can only judge whether it was an opportunity we couldn't miss is in a couple of years time.

Amor has no end of potential, but he's unbelievably green. In a couple of years time he could be worth going after.

He certainly runs hard and hits even harder so he's got all the tools.

But that's the point isn't it? In 2 years time every other club in SL will probably be sniffing around. I don't know a great deal about the players in question, but in principle, if the club felt they (or any other player since we're being hypothetical) had star potential, wouldn't it be better to bring them in now and take control of their development, making use of chances to loan them out for first team RL as appropriate?

Completely agree. And what might be 2 years might become 1 if in full time training and working with Internationals.

Lets work on figuring out what "retain" means first Damo, then we will move onto RL matters.

He has obvious been identified as a player with potential. He played for Bristol and Leicester earlier in his career an obviously did enough to be signed by Donny. He then impressed someone at Leeds enough for them to sign him.

But it's not a risk. It's not like Leeds are handing him Keith Senior's shirt, salary and ebay login and throwing him into the team. He'll probably spend 6 months in and out of the side then either drift off to the NL or cement a place. If it works out you get a player on the cheap, if it doesn't its not like it's cost you much. He'll be on just enough to make full time professionalism worth a punt, but it won't be a big impact on your salary cap spend.

Maurie Fa'asavalu was identified in a pretty similar way but had less experience in professional sport than Coady does and had the added problem of not speaking English. He turned into an international player and has been an absolute bargain for Saints.

There is still plenty of time and salary cap money for Leeds to make a big signing or two.
