Quote ="JerryChicken"Truth in three sentences (above).
Ablett didn't have to do anything, showed remarkable discipline, niggled (part of the game), got the reaction, hoped for a penalty but struck gold when Wardle displayed all the attributes of a Sunday pub team thug, his surprise at seeing the red card tells you everything about the Big Daft Lad theory - most of them haven't even read the rules.
Paul Andersons comments after the match also displayed the heritage of the BDL Club ...
[i“I’ve not looked at it but, if he’s punched him, he’s probably got what he deserves. I’m happy for him. It’s a real defining moment in Joe Wardle’s career.
“People go out and niggle and he’s stood up to it. I’m not happy with the sending-off but he’s grown up a bit today.”

You could read Andersons comments in a different way though which is that Wardle will have grown up knowing that you have to expect niggle and ignore it otherwise you get sent off.

| Would Wardle have been sent off had he aimed one punch at Ablett? I'd say probably not. Paul Wood didn't in the Challenge Cup final last season.
It gets harder to ignore when a player throws a volley of shots against an opponent unwilling or unable to return fire.
You probably also have to take note who the video referee is on these occasions.

One punch is not. As I think tvoc is alluding to above, referees will generally avoid getting the red card out for the odd blow thrown in a melee, especially if both players are content to get involved. They'll generally either give both a card (depending on how annoyed they are with the ensuing fight probably) or neither.
Not the same as throwing multiple punches at an opponent who isn't throwing back.
I struggle to understand why anyone can't see a difference between the incidents.

Because it was a Leeds player and apparently our players are untouchable by refs and disciplinary

Justin Poore was sent off against Wigan for throwing a single punch at Liam Farrell earlier in the season. Weller Huraki, and Justin Carney as well as a Hull player I can't remember the name of (Tickle?) were also sent off earlier in season for 'striking to head'. It seems with the WC coming the RFL are wanting to rid the game of mindless thuggery ahead of the exposure the game will receive come the world cup. Wardle's sending off seems consistant with that.

Don't worry, it's a great tactic for you to have and continue - going down to 12 men and beating Leeds.
Third year on bounce isn't it?
Bailey red + LOD red for LOD's glass jaw - Giants win.
LOD's challenge on Kirke - red card (harsh call IMO for a number of reasons) - Giants win.
Now Wardle's tantrum - red - Giants win.

Both McGuire and Wardle should have seen red if that's the rules regarding striking out, Ablett had one thing in mind in trying to get his team a man advantage cos nothing else was working for the Rhinos to be fair, Wardle will learn from it and come back an even better player for it.'"
1. Wardle ted no-one, he put out a flurry of wussy taps because he was upset at an ickle bit of niggle. If you're going to get sent off, make it worthwhile. What a dimwit. What a big soft dimwit.
2. If you really believe that Ablett was psychologically skillful enough to manipulate Wardle's hissy fit, you need to stop overthinking things mate.
3. McGuire retaliated to Cudjoe's knee in his eye. He said to the ref "You saw that didn't you?" and the ref replied "Yes", I don't think McGuire's flailing even connected with Cudjoe did it?

More importantly....Ablett for me was shown up in the this weekend, the pace and also reading the playing was above his level as a stand in. Playing on the back foot as a stand in is much different than be on the front foot. Need to fill that gap, either Watkins in and hope Ben Jones Bishop is coming back or give Keinhorst a run out at with Watkins staying on the wing. watkins has the ability to come and play off his wing as he did on saturday.
No go at Ablett as I think he is a great utility player and also when he plays in the pack is able to give good offloads and runs some aggressive lines rather than just the straight up channel

| It's all hand bags at ten paces, when I played in the Leeds and district arl many moons ago ,any kind of punch up was deemed to be an invitation for the spectators to join in.
Especially over at hull. which must be some kind tradition over there,so not only had you to dodge punches from the opposition you had to contend with people wading in from the touch line.
To get sent off required a special kind off skulduggery . For the record I would have been quite happy for wardle to have ten minutes in the bin, just to let him cool off.

The only comment this fine Union has on this incident is as follows
"After the coming together between two centres at the Tetley's Challenge Cup tie on Saturday, the PFU chastises all members for their lack of involvement in the aftermath. The fact no member has been seen to swing a punch in this mêleé is a disgrace to the good name of this Union.
There is a serious culture problem within the Huddersfield chapter, this is the second time in two weeks that a mêleé has been unattended by members and the shop steward has been called to answer the questions of the committee with a view to stopping this disgraceful behaviour.
Furthermore, the PFU congratulate all 8 clubs who have progressed to the Quarter Final of the Tetley's Challenge Cup."

Wardle's sending off was deserved as he threw several blows without any coming back - as I commented earlier reminiscent of Radford on Bailey with the same outcome. Poore, I think was a little unlucky after being jostled by Farrell - then lights out - the quality of the shot probably had a lot to do with the card coming out. There was another double sending off in the last minute at Salford (Hull KR) for nothing more than handbags.
IIRC Carney was only sin-binned (but shoud have been sent off as he tried to hit anything and everything in a ten metre circle) while Hauraki and Tickle were sent off for exchanging blows although in that instance Tickle was the aggressor and Hauraki was only defending himself after taking two shots first.
The referee was Steve Ganson - no wonder he called it a day shortly afterwards.
I don't doubt the RFL have been looking at a clamp-down this season but I trust and hope it will all be forgotten about before the World Cup.

1) oh it was definitely worthwhile - we all worked hard for each other to the tune of 24-8
2) it must just be his ugly face that offends so many people then that they want to smack him in it.
3) it wasn't a deliberate knee to the head it was a last ditch tackle to prevent a try and maggie was flapping his head about like a fish trying to get the ball down. The punches were pathetic yes you are right- but the fingers in Leroy's eye were cowardly.
