| Quote ="Andy Gilder"Oh, and there is not, nor has there ever been, a "momentum rule".
Where the passer ends up in relation to the ball has no relevance in determining whether it's a forward pass or not. It's not a difficult concept to grasp, if it travels forward from the hands then it's a forward pass. If it goes backwards from the hands, it's not - even if it subsequently drifts forward.
Yet nobody in the Sky commentary team fronts up to Stevo and tells him he's talking garbage every time he uses it. Why?'"
Because they have to share a hotel room with the tw*t, and after many years of knowing him, they've learnt to just keep shut and save themselves the hassle.
Basically... it all boils down to it just being a bit stale. Eddie & Stevo have been doing the job what, at least 10 years?! Is it even closer to 20?! They, and their bosses, have just become OK with the fact that it's a bit sh[ii[/it these days. It just needs freshening up. The game has changed so much in 20 years, it's about time the Sky commentary team caught up.
Edit - Must be 20 years the more I think about it?! I keep thinking 2000 was "recent", when in reality that was a decade ago! It worries me that 1991 was 20 years ago. P.s As if it's MAY already?! WTF!?

| Quote ="Andy Gilder"I know it will attract the usual class-based comments, but the contrast couldn't be greater between Eddie & Stevo and Stuart Barnes & Miles Harrison on Sky's rugby union coverage. They strike the perfect balance between entertainment and information, their studio guests usually appear at ease and willing to offer their insight without being dragged into petty squabbles between the two main presenters. It's time Sky gave their rugby league coverage a similar makeover - more airtime for the likes of Brian Carney and Jon Wells would be a good start.'"
Whilst that may well be true Stuart Barnes is still Stuart Barnes and I can't look at his fat little face without wanting to stick my arm through the screen and into his pudgy little smug face.
As you were.

| The Barnes vs Stevo "debate" was atrocious. RL got owned. Primarily because Stevo can't hold an intelligent conversation without getting hotheaded.

| Quote ="Andy Gilder"Fair enough, but I can also appreciate that a part of any rugby league audience is potentially going to be new to the game, particularly on a Bank Holiday afternoon when folk might be channel hopping to find some live sport to watch.
If your first introduction to rugby league is listening to Stevo arguing that black is white until he's frothing at the mouth, what does that teach you about the game other than reinforcing the stereotype of the chippy northerner?
As I've said elsewhere, he's a poor version of Phil Gould. While Gus may be argumentative and colourful, he's usually talking sense through it all. Stevo is usually talking out of his backside. His attempt yesterday to accuse Danny Washbrook of deliberately taking a Saints player out in the air, his over-the-top reaction to what was basically a mis-timed hand-off from Ben Cross on Friday are all attempts to be "controversial" that detract from the product rather than enhancing it.
If he's doing it deliberately, then Neville Smith at Sky needs to have a word in his ear and get him to tone it down. If his employers are encouraging him to do it - which is entirely possible given their delight in replaying supposedly "controversial" incidents while the game is still going on - then they are in danger of turning the game into a sideshow, little more than a comedy vehicle for the two buffoons.
I know it will attract the usual class-based comments, but the contrast couldn't be greater between Eddie & Stevo and Stuart Barnes & Miles Harrison on Sky's rugby union coverage.
Cant say I've ever been swayed when deciding on watching a sport or not by the commentary team, rugby league has been on sky now for 20 years, I'm not sure a change of commentary staff would change viewing figures either way.

Why, just because I call it as I see it?
Quote ="Gotcha"The second cas try on Friday was clearly forward. My mate, a big cas fan (and a ref I might add) stood absolutely in line with it and called it forward immediately. The first one you are indeed correct, and in reflection I personally would say had the second been allowed you could have understand after chalking off the first.'"
Neither were forward passes as I interpret the laws. On both occasions the ball left Chase's hands level or backwards (not forwards), he remained ahead of the ball until Owen received the ball.
Just my opinion you understand.

But you couldn't be further from missinterpreting tvoc. The rules are clear if it leaves his hands forward then it's forward. On Friday that was the case with the second.
Just to put in perspective. I was away for a football tournament with my son this weekend, bit watched the game on the big screen. Watching it with my very biased cas supporting mate who's son was also playing footy. I took a lot of stick over that first dissallowed about the ref been in leeds pocket.
After that dissalowed i was speaking with our equally biased cas mate on the phone who was at the ground. He was still on when the second one was on,and he immediately said forward saying he was directly in line. I then put him on to our mate with me who was chomping away moaning and having watched a couple of replays he agreed it was forward. Still wouldn't stop moaning about the first though.
What was ypur opinion on Saints disallowed try? I though that was far more debatable than the Cas second one.

Re-read what I said in the post you're replying to.
I don't dispute that ' =#FF0000if' it left his hands going forwards it would be a forward pass, I dispute your opinion that that is what happened.

No perspective is neccessary. They're opinions just the same as mine. Club affiliation doesn't (or shouldn't come into it) and if it did would I be claiming the tries should have stood?
Quote ="Gotcha"What was ypur opinion on Saints disallowed try? I though that was far more debatable than the Cas second one.'"
I really don't recall the incident. I've scrubbed the game from Sky+ so I'll have to see if the disallowed score was featured on 'All The Tries' and get back to you.

| Is anyone else watching tonight getting bored with the "Saints Injury Crisis" coming from Eddie all game. Not one super league club is without injuries at the moment.
We didn't get as many mentions when we were short on numbers last year.

Actually, that isn't true. You got plenty of mentions. Tons of them. And we all got bored of it last season. So this is payback time.

I think eddie and stevo should be hired out to the UN. Because they have a unifying effect in that everyone forgets there own differences and just hates them!!!

| In most professional walks of life people don't continue to do the same job at the same level for 20 or more years.
But on TV commentators seem to go on forever or until they commit a major gaffe.
I don't think Barry Mac is the answer he talks too much over the action getting across his last point & he tries too hard to come up with the comic quip.
O'Connor is worse.
I like Carney & John Wells, whether they can work with a professional commentator remains to be seen.
I think there should always be the balance of one ex-player to a tv journalist supplemented by one or two "colour" commentators.

I think they finally admitted defeat in about the 76th minute. That was beyond even the "Mighty S".

We did a Grand Final in the second half and capitulated. It was never on. We didn't have the mental reserves to do another Cas/Hull/Wigan/you name it comeback! But we have done some rather good comebacks this season. Too many of them for my nerves.

I think the point is that Eddie's 'never write off the Saints' line is getting a bit tired. It's hardly exclusive to Saints. We've probably produced plenty more comebacks over the last few years.

Oh, that's just because under Ian Millward we made an art of it. We had to. Our defence was e back then. With making so many comebacks this season, I think it's reminded him of the old days. However, he's not yet clicked on that we're not that team anymore!
