| Quote ="Gotcha"As good a player as I think the kid is. If he manages to get a salary anywhere near that at this stage from ANY club, then I think the salary cap could be seeing massive changes in the short term.
Lots of clubs current young stars will be looking for big upgrades if he manages that. That is a ridiculous sum of money for someone at that stage of their career.'"
I disagree - this is the brightest talent around in a key position - the monies talked about will not be much different to the monies the likes of McGuire and Burrow would have been on at his age.
This is a very short career even if he earns at the quoted level for 10 years he will only earn what a chavball player can earn in a year.
At the end of their playing career they are basically starting again with a body that is worn out

Seems to be 50 minutes or thereabouts (usually starts on the bench) and still has trouble finding shorts that stay above his butt cheeks.
I don't think he's actual unfit though, he just looks it.

I too think he is potentially one of the brightest talents around, hence why I said "as good as I think this kid is". But I dont however, think any player at that stage of their carreer is worth risking nearly 10% of your salary cap on.
For Salford it might be a gamble worth taking, and building a side around. For a top club though, it would seem ridiculous to try and integrate that sort of resource into a team with other top players already.
In a couple of years when he has had 3 seasons of proving himself, then is the time to demand the money.

But by then he only has 7 years of earning potential at the highest level - not long - good luck to him if he can get the money.
Let's face it the salary has gone up in years which is in effect a salary reduction - why do everyone - Rugby club CEOs excluding - think this is a positive step for the quality of the entertainment on the field?

I bet there isn't a player that has played super league that was earning over £100k at less than 20 years old.
There has been many potential stars as good and better than Myler. Short career or not, why should he be in a position to demand more than them.
That is all I am saying. The wage he is after at this stage is ridiculous to me. In a couple of years when proven, I can fully understand it.

supply and demand innit - this will show whether there is a market for what he offers and the price he wants.

Iestyn Harris, Paul Sculthorpe, Farrell.
Let's turn this on its head would he be contributing any less to the team than any of the big earners - especially if he is the playmaker - surely he should be rewarded equally as well - age is purely a number.

As far as I read it I don't think gotcha is questioning his talent rather the risk of tying up so much money on an "unproven" player, can Myler keep this form up for more than 6 months? can he step up and do it in semi finals, grand finals etc. Lots of very promising young players fade away.

Good example. When he was 19 he really looked like he could be a top player. I think some personal problems played a part in his not really fulfilling that potential (or so I heard, could be rubbish) which is a shame.

| Myler is all class and there will be a big market for him.
The England game has certainly done his rep no harm. Had McGuire not injured his arm nobody would've been talking about Myler. McGuire was sublime in the 20 or so mins before his injury and ran the show.
However, Myler IS the real deal and market forces will dictate a move. Salford will have to accept that reluctantly and cash in whilst he is such hot property.

I can't work out how Wire have the room under the cap with all the relative big names they've brought in and currently have. Morley, King, Briers, monahan, parker, higham, carvell, mathers etc.. i suppose they've let go gleeson who will have been on a fair whack but they must be sailing close to the wind cap wise.

Sam Burgess signed his new contract last year at 19, and I think it's a fair bet that he's on more than 100k.

Parker - already at Salford this season.
As the move will be for 2010 there's every chance the sums will add up once Briers and Monaghan are away.

Reardon and Gleeson out, Mathers in. I dare say we have a healthy buffer to the cap.
If you put a realistic view to King's ransom $600 Aus per season, yeah right!. We are paying more than Saints and Leeds, as we have to attract with cash and potential, as opposed to finals.
A little tit bit too, King isn't even the highest paid player at Warrington.

That is probably true. I did not think about him.
Only thing I would say there is that he is the star of the Bradford side, and therefore ok to use him and build the team around him.
Which is why I said I could understand Salford doing it with Myler. But thought the money was too much for Myler when intergrating him into a team with big stars already. A large chunck to tie up to somebody unproven at this stage.
