| We all know that most 50s US Sci-fi films are just an excuse to get them there Commies past the Censors ... Call 'em Aliens and we're assured of getting it past them.
Of course, the definative version of W O T W isn't even a film
The 50s one did exactly what it said on the tin, whilst the Cruise vehicle had a load of glaring plot faults.
- A fully loaded jumbo jet lands on the house they're all hiding in. No bodies and the house not that damaged
- What was with the kid screaming every 5 minutes
The best bit of tension was the Tim Robbins slightly insane cellar scene, but when they finally got to Boston in the end, conclusive proof that Martians will only kill working class people. Whilst the posh bits of Boston suffered the horror of having a couple of bins knocked over by rampaging forces from outer space ....

I agreed with your earlier point that the best version of the story is not even a film.
I know the answer to this, its the bleedin obvious answer, but why do American film makers have to do remakes of any "non-American" film and set them in America ?
Surely the American audience aren't so shallow as to actually understand that there is life beyond their own country ?
Like I said, the answer is the bleedin obvious one.

OK, so you've listed two 'glaring plot faults' (btw, there are bodies in the crashed plane). The kid screaming is hardly plot point. If she didn't it might be. I'll even chuck you in another one for free, i.e. his son surviving after going over the hill. That was daft.
We know you dislike the Cruise film. Fair enough. Now tell us what is so brilliant about the 50's film, other than it was made a long time ago?

Like I said, the answer is the bleedin obvious one.'" What I love about American films is how glaring obvious they make it that their American audience is, well, stupid.
For example, watch any film that cuts to a scene overseas and they'll have a subtitle - "Paris, France" or "London, England". I'd imagine that only the Americans need to be told that Paris is in France and London is in England etc.

| Like I stated before the best horror/thriller films I've seen in recent years are REC, The Orphanage and Ringu. Americans then have to make these films almost identical, take away everything that was good about these films and are big budget and absolutely poor.
I seriously doubt Slumdog Millionaire will win the "best picture" oscar as it isn't an American film!

Yes, but sometimes they still need even more clues, such as every hotel in Paris looking onto the Eiffel Tower.

Fair play. I thought he murdered someone in one of the many hostage situations he pulled. But I hold my hands up if I'm wrong on that one.
If he ain't murdered anyone, just a bit of robbery and violence inside, let him out. He's been in a while.

I'll run with your say so. I don't have a reason to dismiss what you say..........yet.
I'm in your age bracket (roughly), so less of the Wee Boy!!!
I saw a film last week called Pathology, with the slogon 'no BODY is safe'. Oh it was fun!! Lots of meat locker students cutting up bodies, then executing perfect murders, then burning the bodies. It was like CSI on speed. Or was that me? It was ok actually, it perked up when the porn started, you know, young people - knifes - blood - hot sex. I think I'll watch it again.

Yes that wasn't my greatest prediction.
Reckon the good ol' US of A will want to remake it though set in America like they do with every other decent film

Also, how does the video camera work when all other electrical devices are dead?
Sorry, pedant mode.
It's an awful film and about as anti-European as you can get. Americans can keep it. But that's just an opinion and I can understand how people could have enjoyed it.

I watched Mark Kermode's review and it was scathing. I'm in two minds now. It's one of those films that could easily be messed up badly.

Maybe I exaggerated a little (I have been known to do that), but there is very obvious anti-European sentiment and the film is really made for an American audience first.
dystopictimes.blogspot.com/2006/ ... orlds.html
Summary of some things here. However, there are other references, the food the girl orders that Cruise claims isn't really food (it's European), the lines of US flags, the foreign invaders (what -from Europe?), the very fact that they end up in Boston and the statue of Paul Revere is where the first sign of the alien fungus dying.
There was an interesting discussion when the film came out on Newsnight Review. There were other things you wouldn't notice unless you had them pointed out - but Spielberg isn't a crude filmaker so not surprising.
None of that was a reason why I didn't like the film though. I thought it lacked any real scale and lost pace in the cellar segment (the paranoia thing just didn't work. The the ending where they all meet up at Grandma's made me want to puke.
Have you seen Watchmen? I seem to remeber you were keen a while back. I only ask because it's a massive effort for me to get to the cinema - with work and the kids (no available babysitters). Is it worth the effort?

Hey, I agree on some points (especially the ending) but I get annoyed at the claims that it is an inferior remake of a classic. Some people will just turn their nose up at enything new.
Oh, and speaking of anti-European, I caught some of the fantastically bad 'Red Dawn' on Virgin One last night. There's a cracking bit where they ask if the filthy commie backstabbers have invaded Europe too. No, they are told, and Europe has decided to stay out of this one. He guesses that two in one centruy is enough for them (except for England, oddly enough, although he doesn't think we'll last too long. No mention of Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland).

In fairness I thought the original was one of the less memorable 50's sci-fi offerings, Spielberg certainly beats that.
