Very good and fair point mate but....If/when Beckford goes we will HAVE to spend ££ imo to replace him and there are players that just aren't good enough at this level and will need replacing whether that amounts to £'s transfers or freebies money will still need to be available.

The worrying thing about Beckford is we will receive no money for his departure, so I hope Bates doesn't use that as an excuse to get a replacement of similar value i.e another free.
ps how do you make a picture appear in your Sig? Its starting to do my nut in , thanks

You contradict yourself there. If beckford is available for people on a free then its possible for other people of necessary quality to be available for free. I agree that the likelyhood is that we will need to spend a bit to get a goalscorer of the right calibre though.

That's not the point i was making in his case other than Beckford which striker is available on a free that would be deemed good enough to replace him?

| Who do we think is good enough for the Championship in this current squad?
I think we'll get hammered down the flanks without a couple of new fullbacks, and a new CB with abit of pace may be needed (IMO most championship clubs have a striker with Beckford esque pace.)
A holding midfielder is a must, as is a goal scorer.

I think that most of the players as individuals are strong enough to cope in the championship in an established team, and most have, but I don't think that the team as it is will do well in the championship. Too many average/poor CC standard players, and not enough good CC standard players

I kinda feel this way, think we'll need some CCC players. Don't understand all the fans wanting a promotion charge in our first year. I'm just gonna take each game as it comes, I'll be happy with a decent season, then build on that. Obviously doing something that Leicester have done would be brilliant, but I won't be expecting it to happen.

Splashing out money doesn't guarantee success but it makes it significantly more likely than relying on free transfers and short term loan deals.
Its possible to pick up a bargain or two that way - if you're prepared to pay big wages and have no competition from Premier League sides - but to build a successful team you need to spend money.
That way you get access to players who otherwise wouldn't be available and you price out some of the competition.

| Spotted this on a rumours site - there was no evidence to back anby of it up - but its interesting food for thought all the same:
Ins:
Jamie Ashdown Gk from Pompey
Tommy Spurr RB from Sheff Wed
Neil Collins CB from Preston NE – Permanent Deal
Brian Stock CM from Doncaster
Michael Doyle CM from Conventry – Permanent Deal
Nick Montegomery CM from Sheff Utd
Sanchez Watt WING from Arsenal – Season Loan
Jamie Ward FWD from Sheff Utd
Aaron McLean FWD from P'Boro
Outs:
Jermaine Beckford FWD to Everton – 95% done deal FREE
Jason Crowe RB to a lge1 club
Aidy White LB to a lge1 club on Loan for Season
Bradley Johnson Mid to a Championship side – Possibly Bristol City or Doncaster Rovers
Tresor Kandol Released
Paul Dickov Released
Mike Grella to a lge1 club on Loan For Season
Other Possibilities include:
Marc Wilson MID from Portsmouth
Chris Morgan CB from Sheff Utd
Nicky Bailey CM from Charlton depending on their promotion from playoffs
Simeon Jackson FWD from Gillingham
Gary Roberts FWD/WING from Huddersfield again depending on their promotion from playoffs
Also, and how would this go down......how about Alan Smith returning?

| Very interesting - quite a few of those I'd happily have. FWIW I do think money will be made available this summer and that we'll pick up a few decent signings - regardless of the way spending has gone in the past my gut feeling is things'll be different now. For all the negatives about Bates, you can see his point re spending in the past. Whilst we were in League One, we had to be careful - there was no guarantee, regardless of spending, that we'd go up, so if we'd splashed out on a couple of high (well, higher anyway...) profile players but not got promotion we'd have ben stuck in League One with probably a too high wage bill for that league. Now we're in the Championship, the revenue coming in will be greater, and we're in a much better position to be able to take the risk financially.
Added to that, whilst the fact we're Leeds Utd has been enough to get certain players in, would it have been enough to get the kinds of names mentioned on here to drop down a league (and potentially take a wage drop) with no definite guarantee of getting out of League One? Again, now we're in the championship, totally different proposition. Leeds are obviously a club back on the up, and the exposure we got from the cup run has also helped out no end in making us even more of a tempting proposition - I can se a lot of players out there wanting to join us this summer.
Oh, and for the record, despite everything surrounding his departure, I'd have Smith back in a flash - very much akin to the return of David Batty back in the day. It's time to put all the Man Utd stuff regarding Smith behind us (after all, the money we got just about kept us alive by all accounts) and he would be an ideal player for us.

Thats pretty close to my feeling on the subject.
Bates backed both Wise and Blackwell with money when in the CCC (Soon the NPower Championship I beleive), so we may see the same.
Would take Smith back, along with most of the players Newcastle or WBA want to offload.

Jesus man. Are you for real? Why the hell would we release Bradley Johnson? He's just been given a new deal. And do you really think Tresor Kandol with a year to run (on a no doubt decent wage) will agree to that prematurely coming to an end? You're also suggesting we sign Doyle, Montgomary and Alan Smith? So the same defensive mid three times. Chris Morgan is an ageing animal and Tommy Spurr would never join Leeds. It really is happy season now isn't it?
