| Cracking game. Fantastic defence and good attack too. Especially in the conditions.
I think Wire had Hull at 10-0 up but couldn't compose themselves enough to manage the game properly. But huge credit to Hull for coming back.
Both teams were a credit to the sport today.

| I thought it was a good game, last 20 minutes was a bit crazy but enjoyed it!
Sad to see empty seats mind you.

| Thought the attacking quality was poor, but the defences excellent. You could argue the attacking nullified because of good defence, but most of those errors were self enforced.
Glad Hull won the game, but do think it was a case of Wire losing it, rather than Hull winning it. Warrington were the better side over the 80, and even at the end should have scored. That lost ball wasn't down to Houghtons tackle, but simply Currie's control.
Thought Daryk Clark was the best player on the pitch by a long way. By contrast I thought Ratchford, who I rate highly, was the reason Warrington lost the game, and very poor. His positioning was poor, and his whole demeanour came across complacent.

| Quote ="ThePrinter"Tony Smith's sides as I've mentioned before on here lose a lot in big playoff/cup games when the scoreline is close (with the 2004 GF being the exception to the rule) and wins come from getting a few scores clear. If it's even or very close approaching the final 20 then I think Hull will do it and going by those recent results listed above it looks likely it'll be close.'"
Called it, Tony Smith has lost nearly every close big game he's coached.

| As a final it wasn't the classic some are already trying to make it out to be. The first 60 mins was pretty average, good defence especially from Warrington but nothing to write home about if you saw the exact same in a league game. The last 20 got it going and I agree with Gotcha, whilst obviously Houghton's presence was needed for the tackle, he didn't actually force the ball out, Currie just stone cold lost it when he shouldn't have even with Houghton there.
The talk a few pages ago about 3/4's.....showed exactly today Wire's shortcomings in that department.

| Classic? surely not,i thought it was a pretty dour game that came to life only in the last 10 minutes when Hull pulled it back to 10-6.

Houghton didn't physically force the ball out but he did manage to grab the ball carrying arm and pin it back. That meant that Currie couldn't reach out and had to rely on sliding over. If the pitch was wet he would probably have got there, but thems the breaks. The impressive thing was that Houghton got there at all after playing 78 minutes in that heat and being involved as much as he was.

The irony of that tackle is that Currie had just swatted away the eventual Lance Todd Trophy winner in Sneyd like he was a little fly.

| I suspect Warrington would have won had they not lost Bodley, they rely on him a lot for direction.
Also as I said on the other thread I thought it was an enjoyable match.
Sandow was awful in the second half - didn't even look interested half the time when Warrington had the ball never mind in defence. His attempt on the high kick that led to hulls try was embarrassing (sort of thing you see in a kids game)

The 40/20 a side I thought Sandow was garbage. Thought Clark was outstanding. Gidley proper choked with his goal kicking.

pretty garbage but his contribution at the end was match clinching in a game without much standout play so it was obvious he would get it.

| Heard a journalist a couple of years ago say that they're usually too busy taking notes and tweeting during the game to accurately judge the performances in detail so they just usually vote for who do the obvious standout stuff. He said this after Hall got it in 2014 ahead of McGuire who most felt deserved it. Plus with Houghton's tackle I think their was only 90 secs left so probably had already voted, if they voted at the end of the match that motive swung it towards him.
I'm not sure why in today's world with the technology why they couldn't vote after the final whistle, surely would only take 2/3 mins whilst the team is celebrating on the pitch before going up the steps.

funny thing is i reckon Sandow would have got it had Warrington to have held on for pretty much similar reasons Sneyd won it. both were pretty average on the whole though.
You are right though , Houghton deserved it.

| Thought Sneyd was a worthy winner having set up both Hull tries. Wouldn't have got back into it without him. Wouldn't have had any complaints with Houghton getting it though, who was tough and dependable throughout.

| It was a final. Both teams played finals rugby. Defences were both very good.
The attacks of all teams, this season in particular, break down under real defensive pressure. Basic skills are so poor they can't be executed. Hence you get a game like that where you put 80% of effort into defence and attack consists of playing it very, very safe. Really struggled to watch the game.
Still, thought Houghton's tackle was worthy of the trophy.

why pick on one cup final back in the day? there were many great, average and poor finals going back to 19 hundred and...dot but its hard to argue that the finals over the last decade have been any better than of the poor side. it was a memorable final yesterday due to the end but it was a pretty poor game to watch otherwise. not just my opinion but a few others who i watched the game around and were casuals who only see the big finals really and that says a lot.

| Hull fans will have enjoyed it. I think it was as good a game as SL is capable of this season. No doubt it was a true contest between two evenly matched teams, both giving everything.

| I enjoyed it lots. It's the best final I've been to as a neutral. Well, maybe the Stains comeback against Bradford might edge it, but still, good viewing.
And it was part of a cracking weekend. The weather was sweltering, and we found some fantastic boozers.
