I think that all our politicians have massively underestimated the effect of economic migration from Eastern Europe in the last couple of years on a basic human level. I heard on radio 4 the other day that a serious study was about to be undertaken at Oxford Uni to really try and understand how these large influx of migrants actually does psychologically effect people. Rural communities and big cities also tend to react differently also. Humans are programmed to react in certain ways - simply telling people that migrants are good for Britain and expecting this to override a lot of basic instincts is naive. We are a very accepting bunch in Britain (compared to many places), but experience would surely suggest that in previous mass migrations into this country there has always been a fairly protracted period of adjustment. Blair was mistaken to open the door to the new EU members straight away - 800,000 Poles (no matter how skilled and hard working) just turning up is going to cause problems. Most of the other EU countries didn't, for what seem now like sensible reasons. The far right will always be waiting for opportunities like this to pedal their predjudice. The mistake was to (quite unecessarily) give them this opportunity. A slow adjustment period and initially controlled migration from new EU countries (like everyone else did) might have meant that when we did finally open the borders fully it wasn't such a big deal.
Channel 4 did a program and found that even existing immigrants (now British obviously), or sons/daughter of immigrants to this country had serious misgivings about the current influx. It just seems to a lot of ordinary people that there was no thought to what's gone on recently and you add a recession to that and surprise, surprise the Far Right start getting elected.

I went out with Portillo's cousin for a while many years ago. Even she thought he was a t@. Funny how instead of adressing the fact that we managed to create an environment where fascists can get enough votes to be elected, politicians would rather talk about the elections system itself?

8% of the 35% who bothered to vote doesn't sound like enough to gain representation to me but that's what happened on Thursday apparently.

8 seats to elect, seems like getting 8% of the vote would justify getting one of those in a proportional representation system. Can't imagine the Lib-Dems can say much about that. Nobody complains when the Greens or independents get elected this way. It's not taking the problem seriously enough to just look at reforming the way representatives are elected, you need to create conditions where people don't vote for them in the first place.
I prefer first past the post for electing a national government, I actually think these elcetions have given our leaders the wake up call they needed.
