| Quote ="tvoc"In 1978 not only did Syd Hynes rest players before Wembley he also rested virtually his full 1st grade team before the Semi-Final at Odsal.
We went to Hull KR, got mullered with only really Neil Hague in there to continue his try-scoring run (which he did) and then in the final League round of the season at home to Warrington Hynes selected [i'almost certainly the youngest team Leeds have turned out'[/i according to the YEP's Trevor Watson. Average age of the side was 21 and that included Stan Fearnley and there were 3 players (Tony Binder, Ricky Winterbottom and John Carroll) making their debuts ...... and we still won.
Personally I wouldn't have Webb, Senior, McGuire, Buderus or Sinfield anywhere near this match.'"
Tony Binder I remember playing against him in my youth.

| Paul Gill a potential all time great?
Paul Gill even before the broken leg was never likely to be anymore than a solid, reliable (but slow) full-back. The injury forced him into the pack where he did some sterling service leading the 'A' team to several honours along with John Holmes.
John Carroll could have been our Lee Crooks (without wasting the money on actually eventually signing the disinterested, drunken washout) but for the compound fracture (Chev Walker like) injury on the sands of the Recreation Ground. You could hear the snap from the terraces. It left him with a permanent limp and one leg slightly shorter than the other .... what might have been.

| Paul Gill gets mentioned regarding the A team days in the John holmes biography, I thought he had class & made time by intelligence rather than e.t like speed but we'll never know
Crooks and alcohol, killed his career. Kevin Dick went the other way to Hull with similar results.
kevin dick or Mark conway was the tough decision in cup games in the early 80s , Conway iirc had a great game against widns in the all penalties semi final . The hull game with the close scoreline mentioned previously i'm sure Kevin took a dive to win a late penalty.

| The other Australian I'd say is next season's St Helens coach. The other Leeds player I'm still not sure about and I'm looking at the original photo.
If you want to have a stab, feel free.

Yes, I think it probably is. He has the look of a man struggling with old age.

It can't have been Kerry Boustead in '86 as he didn't make the trip over.
I'm sticking with Royce Simmons due to the chunkiness of his thighs on show but it wouldn't amaze me if I was way out on this one.

| That's impressive recall you have there.
Boustead was in the Hull KR team thumped at Headingley in the second to last game under Peter Fox. Ironic that Leeds should do that to the Robins and win the next game away at Barrow when the board had already decided to terminate Fox's contract with Bamford stepping in to replace him immediately.

| That was one of my lowest points supporting the club.Foxy had an aura about him that old walrus face Bamford could never match. I even wrote Mr H Jepson and company a very stern letter regarding the underhand tactics used in ousting Peter Fox (believe me it was very strongly worded for an 11 year old)
Never got a reply though.

Les Kiss was my other guess after Simmons and it helps that he at least played in the game.
Benny Elias without the head band - I suppose it must have happened but it's hard to picture him without it.

Giving Keith Senior and Kylie Leuluai a rest would be a good shout imo, leaving Luke Ambler, Ian Kirke and Greg Eastwood to fight out for the final squad place at Wembley.

| Agree with tvoc re Paul Gill - solid but painfully slow even before he broke his leg. He was signed aged about 24 (certainly not a kid) after shining for BARLA's open-age side, which was very unusual. Good goalkicker though. Played a good solid role for the A Team for years and - IIRC - made an appearance at prop in the first team just the once.

| Since you must all be at the match and therefore no match thread, did any of you lot see that total utter drivel that total utter wakner Millwart wrote in his pre-match predictions on Sporting Life? Seems you would be happy just to grind out a win, and would not really be trying to do any more than that so the result would be a Leeds win but close?
Blue, coal or great, anyone?
