| Quote ="FlexWheeler"Rob burrow's debut/home debut. Think it was at home to Hull in 2001, I think we lost the game. Remember seeing this tiny player come onto the field, never seen a rugby player so small and at the time i thought he looked funny. But then he ran rings round the hull defence to score 2 tries and kicked some touchline conversions, i remember thinking geez this kid is hot sh*t. They'll never be a another player like him. 2011 GF was his crowning moment.'"
It was Rob Burrow's debut and Headingley debut (from off the bench), correct also in that it was a defeat to Hull (16-1icon_cool.gif and it also signalled Dean Lance's departure as head coach. Daryl Powell was installed in time for the following Thursday's trip to Warrington where he gave Burrow his first start and Robert obliged with their only try of the night in a 36 - 6 defeat. Dark days indeed but every cloud and all that.

Mentioned that in my first post, I think. 2005 at home to Hull. Went to the video ref who chalked it off because it wasn't deemed to be a 'mis-kick' and a deliberate attempt to kick to the corner which at the time (still could well be) not an attempt of hitting two points.
Had never seen owt like it before or since. Think it was Calderwood now you mention it. They were looking at the video ref for ages, trying to decipher where his eyes were looking and all that nonsense.

| Excerpt from the following night's YEP:
[iThe game ended on a bizarre note as video referee Bob Connolly disallowed a Rob Burrow touchdown from Kevin Sinfield’s penalty in the final seconds. Sinfield had kicked infield for his scrum-half to chase after indicating an attempt at goal and Smith said: “The officials got it 100 per cent correct. Kevin indicated he was going for goal and obviously he didn’t. He said he mis-kicked it – with tongue in cheek! The rule is when you indicate you’re going for goal you have to actually go for goal. What it showed me is his tactical awareness. Regardless of whether he actually knew that rule – I genuinely don’t think he did, but he has now learned it – the awareness to go for something like that shows a willingness to win, even with that scoreline, at that point in the game.[/i
To add to the unusual incidents on the night Keith Senior also scored a try from a short kick through by the multi talented Ryan Bailey.

Thanks for the information, TVOC - I appreciate that. Can't remember if that is the match Nick Scruton scored for them whilst on loan from us and wearing a blue and amber mouthguard - could have been the season before, mind.

Remember that day clearly now you mention it - storms all day, absolutely belted it down without relent all day from memory. Was stood on the Western Terrace and remember the flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder. If I remember correctly, Gareth Ellis played like a man possessed and it was actually quite a tight game.

| The amazing comeback against Saints at HQ, when we were 20-0 down with 60 minutes gone, only to win 30-20.
Schoey's last minute try at Castleford in the Premiership (early 90's). Earlier in the game, he'd been sin binned for arguing when the ref chalked off an interception try for a imaginary knock on. The ref later apologised for the call.
The 2011 play off semi final at Warrington. Rivals the Saints 2003 CC semi as the best game I've ever seen. One of the greatest atmosphere's ever.

| Personal favourites that I witnessed in person would be:
• the last minute win against Sheffield at Don Valley. Seem to recall it extended our unbeaten start to the season. Penalty given on our 40 meter but managed to edge it forward to the halfway line. Then Harris slotting it over.
• being fortunate to mascot the team away at Wakey in around 1990
• The last or one of the last games Mozzer played for Leeds, head butting a Halifax player away at Halifax. Lost that night and I don't recall him being played again before heading off to Aus
• Getting a thumbs up and being told "well played" by James Graham after heckling him. I think it actually tickled him.
• Hearing we'd signed Harris on the way to Ligher Valley
• the game away at Wire, which I think we won with an entirely British team.
• feeling queasy watching Chev snap his leg

2003. I remember at the time, our amazing late points rush was helped by it not being on TV, as it meant no video refs to slow our momentum.

To a chorus of 'Bobby beats his wife' (three lions tune) from the Southstand - referring to revelations in the papers earlier that week. That was a night with a fantastic atmosphere in the Southstand.
Another one to remember but for all the wrong reasons was the Premiership semi-final against Hull - where John Gallagher bottled catching the bomb right at the end and we lost the game from the resulting try.... I never forgave him for that, I was only a kid at the time, and had no understanding or sympathy for the hard time he was apparently having at Leeds, or for the after effects of the spear tackle - I just thought he was a spineless, gutless, ginger, Union pansy..... And that's being polite.

| Bobby Goulding's missed goal is a good call. Even the North stand erupted after that.
Some others :
Beating Cas with an Academy side at Headingley, when Bluey was coach.
Danny Ward's drop goal.
Sinfield's touch line conversion to beat Warrington at Headingley in 2008(?)
Matt Diskin's try vs Wigan at Headingley in 2004. JJB scored 2 in that game IIRC.
Calderwood's try vs Wigan at the JJB from the 20m tap.

| Garry Schofield's debut vs Auckland as I suddenly realised what Leeds would look like with a world class centre. Also his intercept try vs Cas in the Yorks Cup Final. I wish I could see that again for the first time because he literally charged onto the pass at full speed as though he was an attacking player and so was out of view when the pass was made. The only similar moment since in terms of surprise was McGuire's try in the WCC vs Canterbury.
That Wigan game 94/95 was one of the best I've seen for pure entertainment and the result.
Against us, Martin Offiah scoring a try for Widnes rounding players on the outside as though they weren't there. I'd never seen pure speed like that before. Also Henderson Gill in the first game I watched had me (and the Leeds defence) mesmerised, and in the same year Des Drummond destroying us and terrifying the defence every time he got the ball in the year they were Champions.

| What is this ? A happy thread on Southstander, and one that's not been derailed by the usual "may Dad is bigger than your Dad" stuff we see.....surely my eyes deceive me !!
Des Drummond's "touch down" try in the JP Trophy Semi Final at Fartown....how it was awarded i will never know (I think that won the BBC's try of the season too).
Think GCH mentioned the Schoey try at Castleford after being sin binned, I've never seen a set of fans go so mad when he scored.
2003, we were right in line with Sinny's kick behind the posts, and the moment it left his boot it was over.
My first real hero in Blue and Amber, ET, how he used to just glide across the pitch was amazing to see.
24-24 v Hill KR in the CC Semi Final, how we didn't win that game I will never know, especially as they were down to 12 men.
Scott Donald's try against Saints in the GF 2007, it gave me goosebumps and I was crying like a baby at how excited I was when he scored.
There are so many more....I could be here all day

I'll admit I wasn't confident. Easy to forget after what he did in later years but his kicking back then in 2003 wasn't as good/consistent. Just looking at the video you can see a clear difference in his technique.
Another Sinfield moment. The Tansey Magic weekend try is often talked about but my abiding memory is of Sinfield out of nowhere busting out a cartwheel in celebration.....god knows where that came from

Official attendance of 18k though I reckon there were more present than the subsequent GB v Aus test where the crowd was given as 32k. Atkinson's tries, and the one in the 7-2 semi final win against saints the previous year, made me a fan for life.

I didn't think he would land it at the time. Took a tremendous amount of bottle, and character which we obviously came to see time and again down the years but it wasn't so evident up until this point. Must have been a real sinking feeling for the Saints players behind the sticks who i would guess thought he would miss too!

The lover.'"
Both those were in titanic struggles in typically awful weather. Another memory from the QF V Bradford was Willie Oulton laughing as he lined up the final conversion from bang in front. Apparently one of the retreating Northern forwards had said 'Don Fox missed one of these.' Oulton didn't.
The Atkinson try in the semi at Central Park is still one of my favourite Leeds team tries albeit now only from fading memory - only 38 years ago .... really how did that happen. I can still see Steve Pitchford hit up and offload, Neil Hague dancing across field, Les Dyl arcing to the left and Atky dropped off inside streaking across the muddy mess to score under the sticks.
By comparison already forgotten this season and it hasn't even officially finished yet.
