| Quote ="rich86"Can anybody confirm he scored 2 tries against Northern in a Challenge Cup match in his first game playing scrum half? Was that the '95 season?
Or did I make that up'"
Yes that's entirely correct ............. you've just made that up.
Holroyd has never scored two tries in any match V Bradford (Northern or Bulls) while playing for Leeds.
__________
Holroyd did however play in 4 Challenge Cup fixtures for Leeds V Bradford over 4 consecutive years:
27-02-94 ..... Leeds 33 Bradford 10 ..... Stand Off ..... 1 Try, 4 Goals, 1 Drop Goal
12-02-95 ..... Leeds 31 Bradford 14 ..... Scrum Half ..... 1 Try, 5 Goals
23-03-96 ..... Leeds 6 Bradford 28 ..... Scrum Half ..... 1 Goal
29-03-97 ..... Leeds 10 Bradford 24 ..... Scrum Half ..... 1 Goal

| So, basically, if Holly scored a try in a CC game V Bradford we won, if he didn't we lost. Wonder if Sean Long and Marting Gleeson knew about this at the time?

Some confusion perhaps with Francis Cummins, who IIRC scored at least one (and a good one it was) in a cup game at home to Bradford early in his career?

| Arguably (although not much of one from me) Cummins' best try for Leeds. The shape of things to come ..... sadly not. He still managed to get on the end of lots of good play by others though.
Great try this one (although you wouldn't know from the images) - 27th February 1994
Just a pity the YEP cameramen didn't capture the actual try being scored.

| I think Holroyd was a very talented player, and used to link really well with Schofield, particularly when they used to throw those two huge looping passes (1 each, obviously) and switch play from flank to flank very quickly.
I got the impression that it was off-field issues as much as anything that hampered his development, rather than not being good enough.
He did play in two Challenge Cup finals, so not an entirely undistinguished career. Even if we never looked remotely like winning either of them.

I thought Leeds were right back in it for the first one of those after Fallon and Schofield's two try in three minute burst near the start of the 2nd half. For the next 10 mins we were all over 'em until you know who scored Wembley's greatest ever try. After that we were gone.
Holroyd also played in the inaugural Grand Final in another game Leeds were marginally ousted by Wigan after a titanic battle.

Haha thanks for that. This will be the one, was this his first start at scrum half (seems unlikely but that what I vaguely remember from the announcer)

| Your 'seems unlikely' is correct again. The Bradford cup-tie was Holroyd's 11th consecutive start at scrum-half that season after replacing Patrick Entat in the number 7 shirt.
It was the first time Holroyd had started at scrum-half in the Challenge Cup but not sure why the announcer would be bigging that up.

Oops, wrong again.
No idea why he would be bigging that up. More than likely I am merging together 2 random memories. In my defence I was only 9

You are probably right. I did, to be fair, remember that final quite fondly, not least because it was my first Wembley visit. The next year I thought Leeds promised more and delivered less. Offiah's try remains a great "I was there when..." moment.
I'd forgotten Holroyd was still around in the '98 final. That was a tremendous game. Another superb winger's try won it for Wigan, in very different conditions. I recall feeling a little frustrated at the marker defence though.

| The Cummins try was from a scrum IIRC, he broke through and went 75M to score under the sticks at the Carnegie Stand end. I was stood there at the time.
That was the same game the cruel Leeds fans told Mr Newlove that his taxi was here every time a plane flew over, in reference to his fear of flying?

Didn't Holroyd give away a late penalty that Farrell converted?

It was Holroyd that dropped the ball with an overlap on Leeds last attacking play of the '98 GF IIRC.

Both stretching my memory a bit too far I'm afraid. Could be though. If you;re both right it wasn't the best few minutes of his career was it?

| In fact, thinking about it, it might have been one and the same movement. Knocked the ball on and then clouted someone round the head when trying to retrieve it?

Leeds started the game with Innes and Lowes at half-back (Schofield, Hanley and Molloy were away on International duty) with Holroyd and Harland on the bench. Holroyd was introduced during the half-time break replacing Fallon but he went straight into the stand-off position with Innes moving back in to the centre with Irving moving on to Fallon's wing. Leeds were winning at half-time but it was a scrappy, disjointed performance to that point. Holroyd would go on to score two and create two more and the resemblance to Schofield was immediately apparent, right down to the attitude away from the pitch.
Laughton admitting to having to 'carpet him' a couple of times already before he even got around to making his debut but he reminded him of a young Tony Myler and that was high praise indeed.
Six minutes into the 2nd half Fallon was back out there replacing Iro who had gone down with an ankle injury that would keep him out of the CC Semi-Final V Widnes the following week. That was the game Goulding was waxing lyrical about on SL Supermen the other week - and one in the eye for his former team and boss.
Usual position lads - behind the posts.
Before the season was out it would be Schofield being carpeted by Laughton for breaches of club discipline and receiving a two week club ban.

There are some Leeds legends in that shot.
