Deferred payments are not allowed on the cap, as Wigan well know, as they break the spirit of the cap. They could however, offer Lee the remainder of this season on a this season only contract and offer to look at making room for him on the cap next year at a higher salary and him then sign another contract. This would make Lee a free agent at the end of the season and of course any club could look at making him and offer, so it contains some risk. This would not break any rules as they stand currently.

In fact, they're pretty common.

What Wigan did was take players who were contracted to be paid £x, pay them less in Y1 and then pay them more than their contracted amount on Y2 - a completely different way of doing things.
