Harris played all of '97 for Leeds (after his early season signing) as the starting stand off. The Murray ploy, I always thought, was designed to prevent him from being targetted in defence to keep him fresh for late in the games but ball in hand he was still pretty heavily involved.'"
Having Harris at full-back also meant that the leadership of Darryl Powell wasn't lost to the side.
Had Harris played at 6, realistically the Douglas Bader impressionist wasn't going to get in the side in any other position.

I agree with the reason for playing him at full back and I agree he was still heavily involved from full back (pretty much like Webb is now). Nevertheless full back is where he played in his two greatest season's at Leeds, 98 & 99.

| I would have Lee Jackson ahead of Diskin and the current Buderus.
Used to really enjoy watching Jacko play. An Excellent hooker.

Jacko was great to watch when in posession but he was weak defensively imo and Diskin has had a lot better impact both in attack and defence than Jacko had imo.

I don't think he was weak defensively. He certainly would not have a had a good career in the NRL if he was. Perhaps his team mates at that time were not as good defensively as we would have liked.
I would certainly have liked to have see him in this successful period, at a time we were getting good quick play the balls with excellent supporting rugby.

Fair point but i seem to remember too many "andy hay" efforts in defence from him and like i said you have a fair point re-his NRL stint but that has nothing to do with his Leeds career imo which is the point i'm making.

I'd agree with Newton, Glanville, Morley and Godden, the rest wouldn't add a great deal. For example, as good as Blackmore was, he wouldn't be an improvement on Senior. One name I haven't seen is that of Massella, I'm pretty certain he was still there in '99 and I always rated him.

| 1999 coach or 2010 coach?
The incumbent is more succesful, but he had a better starting point and (from this thread's reaction) has better players - tough call?

I'll always have a soft spot for Murray and cherish the memories of watching his leeds team but i wouldn't swap him for Bluey who has won back to back titles for us.
Whilst it is arguable about having better players available i do think it's clear cut that he's coaching in a much tougher SL than Murray did.

| The only parallels that can be drawn from the two sides is that one was allowed to slide and one has already been allowed to slide. The current situation is akin to that after 1999 when we recruited poorly and did not kick on from a period of success. I didn't attend Leeds games at all from the moment cheap option Dean Lance was appointed and the start of 2003.

Graham Murray was a cheap option in 1998
Dean Lance was a cheap option in 2000
Daryl Powell was a cheap option in 2001
Tony Smith was a cheap option in 2004
Brian McClennan was a cheap option in 2009 but probably the dearest of the SL coaches at Leeds.

Not too sure about that. He was already established at another club.
Still waiting for the return of Daryl, following his world fact finding tour.

When Tony Smith first took the job at the McAlpine he said 'there are only a limited number of head coaching positions at the top grade in world RL.' That's what brought him to this country. He was coming out of contract at the perenial strugglers who finished 10th that season when Leeds came along with an offer at one of the most famous names in the code (Leeds finished 2nd in 2003 and were Challenge Cup finalists.)
I often wonder how much he paid Gary Hetherington for the opportunity.

| Fair point, but we didn't finish 2nd, otherweise we would have been in the GF. Good old Daryl managed to make us the first team to end the qualifying rounds in the top two and not make it to the final.
Good old Stains sort of removed that stigma in 2005 though, becomming the [ionly[/i team in the history of the comp to finish top in the qulaifying rounds and not get to the final.
Still, they're the greatest team the game's ever seen, according to Clarkey.
