| Quote ="McLaren_Field"...because when it all boils down, we are still a little parochial sport where self-interest over-rides the better interest of the sport, and some of those clubs are still run by wealthy local businessmen who forget their business heads when they take on clubs and instead use them as a play-thing, the "local" tag tends to mean that they bring all of their "not over my dead body" attitude to the table when ground-sharing is discussed.
The one interesting thing about this new ground at Wakey is that Maurices plan might be coming to fruition 15 years after he first tried to force it on Wakey/Cas/Fev
'"
I agree with much (all of it really) of your post but I think Wakefield and Castleford find themselves in a current position to potentially both build new grounds on good accessible modern sites. So I can sort of see why Castleford don't want to give up hope quite yet (because after playing their cards close to their chest after the Thornes park mess, Wakey do now look to be in a stronger position with planning the only potential banana skin). Waystone want Castleford to come to Glasshoughton to further develop the site and of course bring more visitors to the current Xscape complex, but if Castleford did not come it would not be the end of the world for them, and I suspect that will be reflected in the level of funding they will be giving to Cas in respect of the build.
The Yorkcourt guys need the stadium to build the rest of a huge development because that is the deal the council/planners are making with them to free up the land for development. Plus they probably sell a hotel and fast-food place just off the back of the ground and being close to the M62. In some ways this is the deal that Cas and Wakey Council should have done at Glasshoughton 10 years ago and they would be in a new ground already... but hindsight is always 20/20.
Poor old Fev don't stand a chance but they should stay in the town and look to gain funding themselves as a community sports body and play a few big games at Wakey or Cas.
If things as Cas start to take a nose dive I am sure the door will stay open in Stanley and it might still happen... we will see! They could both end up with nothing!

Yep you're right. I can understand that attitude as an initial reaction, but I hoped that as people thought about the pros and cons of a ground share they might have seen the potential benefits, sadly not.
Even clubs with as much rivalry as Liverpool and Everton are seriously considering a ground share.

getting to the Newmarjet site will be further but easier for people living on the west side of Wakefield (me).
Straight on the M1 at jtn40, M62 arrive at stadium.
Again for those living in Durkar, Kettlethorpe, Chapplethorpe, Thornes etc. They just jump on the M1 at jcn39.
It's a very easy, straight and uncomplicated journey with less stop start, navigating the shopping districts (Asda etc & Ings Rd).
Upon arriving drivers will face very few if any problems parking which is currently a nightmare at Belle Vue.
The power station site has been cleaned up and decontaminated.

No, you are thinking of Featherstone!
I think one or two people need to lay of Wakey a little bit. It has been a city far, far longer than Leeds and was of course the last and therefore most recent capital City of West Yorkshire, a title that Leeds has never officially held. Leeds is a great and successful phoenix of a City and owes large parts of it's rapid growth to it surrounding towns and nearest City neighbour of Wakefield!

I think they are about equally as close to Leeds at around 8 miles city centre, to city centre, but again Bradford, like Leeds, was not an important centre of commerce until the 17th/18th Century and industrial revolution. Anyway, Wakefield was a City before either of them, just think some people are giving Wakefield a hard time without any real justification other than for the sake of putting it down.

Not really.
Leeds has always been a big, relatively affluent and successful city - built as much on its very long held position as a financial centre as anything else.
Wakefield has been more heavilly reliant on different industries that have long since been in decline.

That is not really true. Leeds is a relative recent success story and has only grown big in the last 160/170 years as the industrial revolution took hold. Prior to the 1800 it was nothing more than a village and dwarfed by all it's neighbours and in particular Wakefield which had been the administrative capital of the region since the 14th century, prior to that Pontefract held the dominant position in the region. Town's like Bradford and Leeds grew very large during the late 19th and early 20th century prior to WW11. The order of the region changed over this period and Wakefield and other towns started to be dwarfed by these two now citys.
Post war the Wakefield regions main industry was coal and (and all its off-shoot industrial processes) of course agriculture in the form of mainly the growing of veg and of course Rhubarb. Something ridiculous like 90% of the worlds Rhubarb was gown in the Rhubarb Triangle at it's peak, the majority of which fell into the Wakefield district.
When all of the West Yorkshire traditional industry started to decline Leeds made a very successful switch, during the 70 and 80's, to re-model itself as a financial centre. Wakefield on the other hand sought to exploit it's excellent location in relation to Leeds and more importantly at the cross-roads of the norths motorway system.
Leeds in now the financial capital of the North with Wakefield the distribution capital of West Yorkshire... that is why they are going to get a new ground as well!

Wakefield became a city by virtue of the Church of All Saints being made a Cathedral in 1888, Leeds by Charter in 1893.
I make that about five years.
Wakefield does have the tallest church spire in Yorkshire though (247 feet).

In the 1880's/1890's when they were both given city status, Leeds was already way outstripping Wakefield in all areas except Wakefield's status as the county town (n.b. not capital) of the West Riding of Yorkshire.
