Once upon a time in the 1970s it became the "done" thing for every half decent singer/band to have "A Christmas Song".

In the main they were and still are the worst ever thing in that acts songbook, the sort fo thing that they all cringe when reminded about but take solace in the fact that it earned them a mint at the time - some, like Noddy Holder and Roy Wood continue to reap financial benefit from their dreadful five minutes of christmas fame, others are glad that their compositions were put to bed long ago, only to find them resurrected on a compilation album which fortunately due to the nature of the beast, will only have a shelf life in Asda of around ten days.

In Elton Johns case there is no excuse.

Already a well established songwriter and performer he could easily have told Dick James to go and do one right there on the office carpet when he asked for a christmas song, but instead he took the back of a fag packet and a pencil stub into the toilet with him and wrote "Step into Christmas" while simultaneously curing himself of two weeks constipation - the flowed from both ends.

It is by far the most dreadful example in a genre of dreadful examples, you could not have picked a more dreadful example, its simply dreadful and I speak as someone who in the last five minutes has just listened to Mull of Kintyre.
