i've still yet to work out why it is a penalty. all you have done it waste a tackle from your own set, i could understand if it was done to waste time. but when the player believes he's been tackled no harm is done to the opposition

Didn't you hear the ref yelling "play on play on play on". He then played the ball. So going by the book it's a voluntary tackle. Harsh but true.

Fair play to Saints tonight, they were on a hiding to nothing unless they put a shed load of points on but still managed to grind out a late win coming from behind against enthusiastic opposition. Sounds familiar.

I would tend to agree with that, but the rule technically is there to stop the attacking team catching the defending team offside.

but can believe he did call play on, my point was it has done no harm to the opposition (along with a voluntary tackle) as he wasn't doing it to waste time. so why should they get a penalty?
for me, play on, with the attack having 1 less tackle would be the best call. other then that, a scrum or hand over would be a much fairer call.
