I've posted this before but mentally the team are in a tremendously difficult situation that most posters seem blissfully unable to comprehend.
Teams struggle to retain titles because its so difficult to mentally get up to performing to the same intensity and consistency for a second year. This squad is trying to do it for a third year - something that hasn't been done in Superleague before.'"
Hard to argue with that. I would say though that if Saints finish first after the regular rounds again, then that consistancy is possible. The difficulty is when big games come up mid season - like Saints in the cup. We are not getting up for them, which could be because of the lack of performance consistancy at that time of year. Very hard to just switch it on. The run in to the playoffs usually has three or four big games in regular season and this is where we start to lift and put it together. I'd be happy to see that again, but I think we are starting from a lower performance base than last year. The up-side is that Saints seem to be at a lower level as well. Our defence the last few games has been a serious concern - Hull scored pretty much whenever they got near our line, and they weren't clever tries. I'm not sure what has happened here.

As long as the players can lift/focus for the play offs I'm happy but you're right: the goal line defence last night looked disjointed and without intensity.

when you race into a big lead and just switch off slightly, I guess its difficult to just switch straight back on.
we are saying its difficult to lift yourselves from one season to another, it must be difficult to be 100% on the ball for 40mins, have a seemingly unassailable lead, then have to suddenly raise the intensity again.....
not saying the team should lost the intensity in the first place, but....

Doesn't help that your 3rd attempt to retain the title is being done with a weakest squad in 3 years.

| Senior is the best centre in super league by miles and at the moment doesn't need to be thinking about retirement at all.
Sinfield looks to be playing well after a poor start to the season and I think Burrow had his best game this season, maybe because McGuire didn't play? Buderus is crucial to Leed's hopes.
I think we're in a good position for the title at the moment. Are defence can be easily rectified, i hope Webb's injury isn't too serious. Saints should be the team to be worried, a lot of missing players, I can see them missing out on all trophies this season.
I thought Leeds finally got some decisions our way last night, after the start of the season where we were not getting any 50/50 calls.

| Quote ="LeedsPokerGuru"agree on all apart from Gibbo. It looked like every time we went keefys side from close in we would score. to be fair Hull weren't that great but they ran the show.
Gibson showed a touch of class once again. He proves to don't have to be big and physical to put a winger over, finesse counts for something too. The winger being Donald we're talking about as well so extra credit. I've backed Gibson all the way as the best out and out centre at the club after Keith and today he showed he's getting back to his promising form that got toopi dropped. IMO deserves the shirt as long as webby is out.
Worral looks done for Leeds.'"
Good post that. Best Gibson's been for a while, although i'm not yet convinced he's the future for us...time will tell.
Agree totally with Worrall. He's no where near good enough. Mind you if he does a steady-ish job at not much cost to the salary cap then i suppose he is of use....

Reminds me a lot of an early years JJB, will tackle anything that moves but offers little going forward.
Still, look how that worked out with a little persistence and some good coaching to add the finishing touches to his game.
On a secondary note, anyone still up for rushing Broughton back off loan and throwing him straight in the first team? Thought not.
If a centre at that level can't either finish himself or lay on for others from being 3 on one against the full back, he's never going to make it. Put under pressure to either back himself or find the right pass for Yeaman to his left or Thorman to his right, he shat himself and fell over.
That's before we get on to his appalling defensive read that gave Donald a walk in. Yeaman had Gibson in his pocket (as he had for most of the evening), no need at all for Broughton to leave his winger and come charging inside.

On an unrelated subject, did anyone see on sky the replay of Sinny shouting at Peacock? Looked scary

Yes agreed re worrall. On Yeaman, i've said many a time on here i rate this lad.. only 25 still to peak, would love him to replace Senior. Top player.

Not to mention the dumb penalty he gave for offside in the first half when chasing a kick (if you can't hear Ian Smith shouting then you'll never hear anything). We scored from that I believe.

Kylie is getting back to where he was.
Maybe he summises the Leeds team well, not doing much early doors and gearing up towards a big push at the right end of the season.
He went off after 25mins in his 1st stint. But his workload was nicely reduced with our early blitz. But is looking good to go.

| Sinfield was awesome.
Great conversion game.
I dont know if I've seen a better performance with the goal kicks.
Cynical people would say that there was no pressure with the kick, but what proffesionalism, to kick goals from that range when it looked like we were pulling away.
Vital he kicked them, considering Hulls gutsy comeback.
Thought his try was taken very well, kept on the ark, didn't do anything risky i.e Jodies changing of direction which lead to him falling over!!
King Kev! All hail the King!

Does also remind me of a very early JJB. Great engine and fully committed. But isn't he about 25 now already?
IMO he's actually a good back up player, because of his durability. He basically tackles all day and takes alot of ineffective drives throughout the game, the dirty work if you will, allowing our much better players like Kylie, JJB and Ali to take breathers throughout the game. He would certainley not be in our first choice 17, but as a squad player, not bad.
As an aside, thought Ablett was good on saturday, hopefully he can keep that up for the rest of the season.

Personally I think he needs to move on to realise his potential.
He came up through the junior ranks as a ball playing loose forward, but he's never had the opportunity to give that role a crack at first team level due to Sinfield's durability.
He's a decent filler at centre or in tbe second row, but neither of them allow him to make the most of his abilities.
If he has aspirations to step up to representative level, then he may need to showcase his talents elsewhere.

| Yer I'd agree with that, i'm happy with him as a bench second rower, grafts well and offers abit of threat when running wide. He won't ever make representative unless it's at 13, but is he really in the Sinfield/ O'Loughlin/Westerman class? To be honest I don't think so.

Sounds like a 2nd row equivalent of Bailey. Does the basics well, but doesn't blow your socks off in attack. He'll be a cheap option and does a job when needed. I'd keep him on. We don't have a big enough squad to lose players
