You raise a good point, a lot of people forget his natual position is actually a half back.

Can't fault him for trying the NRL though. Thought he made the right decision as he'd acheived everything over here

So that's Simon Irving 0 Appearances second time around, Dean Bell 1 Appearance second time around (and he picked himself) leaving Gary Mercer as the exception.
Pre SL there may have been a case for Les Dyl, John Atkinson and a few others who came out of retirement to play again, although probably in most cases without playing semi pro RL anywhere else in the meantime.
Les Dyl had opened a bar in Spain and came back to play centre to Eric Grothe. I couldn't seeing him doing that for Mark Massa or even Ryan Hall in all honesty.

Still don't think there's a place for him here any more.

| mathers still is a good player i remember people on here saying he was a shoe-in international not so many years ago. like others say his confidence is shot, for most of his time there the wigan front up defence has been non existant. imo he was the mom in the 2004 grand final he was outstanding that night along with many others but (from my seat in the gods at ot) he was everywhere and took everything bradford threw at him, i'd hazard a guess that 2 knee reconstuctions haven't done him any favours either in terms of agility and speed (as he was never the quickest anyway).

| Stick a fork in Richie Mathers - he's done.
Looked good in a dominant Leeds side, hasn't looked a shadow of that player anywhere else since.
His pace, balance and footwork (or lack of) led to him being a "grabby" tackler with a tendency to go high at the best of times. That hasn't improved from what I saw of him at Wigan last year, and indeed has deteriorated given the injuries he's had.
He'd be competing with Jones-Bishop for third choice full-back when everyone is fit. The only justification I could see for signing him would be if Leeds wanted to use him as cover in the half-backs.

What are we talking here, ex Leeds Academy still playing elsewhere in SL?
How about:
Garreth Carvell, Danny Ward, Nick Fozzard, Terry Newton, Adrian Morley and Gareth Raynor.
If it's not a personal question does Ewan Dowes get in by the back door?

First pro club, played in the Leeds Academy and made his first grade debut for Leeds.
I'd say he's more entitled to use the front door than Raynor, who only came to the club in his early 20s and never played in the first team IMO.

Agree that he seems low on confidence but I can't imagine a situation that would pile more pressure on him than a return to Leeds. Also, I don't see much in his game now that would justify us re-signing him.

Ewan Dowes at Leeds:
Played 1 + 10 (Leeds Won 6, Lost 5)
Gareth Raynor at Leeds:
Played 0 + 3 + 1 (NPS) (Leeds Won 4, Lost 0)
Neither registered a point but Raynor had a telling contribution with the boot in a Sky televised game against ?

I was thinking Cas, hacked a kick on in front of North Stand at Western Terrace end IIRC which led to a try

It was mid season 2000.
I'm being vague and need to narrow it down to either Cas or Wakey or Shudds. The ball was heading out of play on the right and Raynor stretched out a boot and hooked it back in for someone to follow up and score.
More to follow...... maybe.

Good we're on the same page. I'm thinking Cas as well.
For once S/Hudds isn't derogatory either as that was their one and only season.
Quote ="King Monkey"It was Cas.'"
Nine years is too recent for my memory without a bit of back up, now if it had been mid seventies.....
Edit: Extract from the YEP match Report:
[iBut the game’s biggest call went Leeds’ way late on, when Cummings controversially awarded them the feed at a scrum which led to Iestyn Harris sending Barnhill over for the game-turning try.
Harris’ conversion gave Rhinos the lead and they sealed the game in stoppage time when Pratt got off his knees inside his own half to keep the ball alive on the final tackle and Lee Jackson and Walker linked to find substitute Gareth Raynor.
He did remarkably well to kick ahead twice and Aussie Graham Mackay ran through an exhausted defence to touch down, Harris goaling from the touchline.[/i
