Indeed. Looking back it was pretty unprofessional of Clarke at the time - a supposedly impartial commentator getting swept up in the emotion of his former club's defeat - especially considering the circumstances of his own retirement from playing. Would he have said the same thing if the incident had not taken place at the end of a narrowly contested Wigan loss in the play-offs? I'm not so sure.

As for the Tomkins section, he was clearly reading from a script - poor preparation from Sky.

I thought Tomkins came over ok in his first TV spot displaying confidence and intelligence and a hint that there will be some humour to come. Burrow spoke well and the ever more impressive Carney allowed McGuire to make his feelings clear with regard to Clarke which was good considering he is a Sky colleague.

The bit I found most shocking was when McGuire said that Clarke called him and left a message.... Not to say something like "Look mate, I've just written a piece about the game and your injury etc - I was a bit riled up at the time and I went a bit too far - I'm really sorry about what I've written, I don't think that at all, and just wanted to apologise to you properly before you had chance to read it yourself"

Oh no, Phil "class personified" Clarke rings a bloke up who's just come out of surgery after a serious injury to basically say "Now then mate, I've just written an article about you, so, whilst you're recovering from your operation why don't you have a read and see exactly what a cheating tw*t I think you are!". Fair play to Carney (who I thought was excellent by the way - especially when apologising for going in with his kness on McGuire - small issue maybe, but he didn't have to say what he did and risked people thinking less of him for admitting it) for raising it and making sure there was no doubt at all how much of a d*ck Clarke was - calls into question exactly what Carney thinks of his esteemed coleague



As for Tomkins, I thought he did pretty well for his first time presenting a segment like that - must have been pretty nervous, but it was a good segment and I thought he came across well.

What exactly did Clarke say when he called MAGS?

The way McGuire told it, Clarke called him but he was in theatre having the operation at the time (if I remember rightly?) When he came round after the op he listened to the message Clarke left, which he said was something like "I've just written a piece about you, let me know what you think" I didn't hear much, if any, mention of an apology, and McGuire's comments seemed to indicate that Clarke stands by what he said. I may have missed something because it was quite late when I watched it, but that's how it came across to me anyway.

Some of the comments Carney made earlier about him indicate that Danny has irritated the $h!t out of opponents for years. For me that was probably the best compliment he could have paid him.

the tomkins bit again worked well as rob was allowed to give his version of events without sam pushing in which is what i expected him to do, sams not a natural yet but has potential to be good in front of the camera and on his first viewing it looks like he's left his arrogance on the pitch
