| Quote ="Lord_Percy"Quick question - where I work has various offices for various companies. At the front door this morning there was a picket line. Would you have crossed it, considering it was nothing to do with my company?

Well, yeah. You can't really set up a general picket. If the strike has nothing to do with your company, you can't not come into work.
I've crossed a picket line today. I'm not in a union, so I have no real right not to come to work. To be honest, most people here seem to be in work as normal.

| Quote ="Juan Cornetto"I was quoting from the ONS report as stated. Public sector salaries are now higher than in the private sector yet the public sector still get the gold plated pension deals which are far superior to the rest of the workers who have to pay for them.
'"
Not to wade too deeply into this debate as a whole, I would very seriously question whether using absolute salaries is a fair measure. If you compare similar jobs in both sectors, how would it come out then?
I can tell you without any doubt that I could earn more doing what I do in the private sector than I do where I am now. I know this because I chose my current job from 3 firm offers. The other 2 were in private sector companies, doing very similar work, and both offered more ducats.
I won't say too much more, as I'm not going to pretend thzt the reason I chose the public sector option was the pension. Because it wasn't.

As someone who derives a large chunk of his fame (and therefore his income) from his appearances on a programme funded by the general public - including millions of public sector workers - you'd think he might be a touch more grateful to those who have enabled him to no doubt have millions in his own pension pot.
I was more offended that he chose to use wounded service personnel returning from Afghanistan to enhance his "point".

The union obviously has too much time and money on its hands if it can afford both to seek legal advice and press coverage about this!!

| LCC's IT network was down yesterday as a result of the strike meaning most of the staff who didn't strike couldn't do much work anyway.

It is. You haven't.
Clarkson is actually in favour of the strikes, he made a joke about how he had to be balanced as he works for the BBC, so said they should also be taken outside and shot.
He made a joke. Precious oversensitive souls got all precious and oversensitive over it. Sadly it is the world we live in.

I feel insulted by your disparaging and insensitive remarks about precious and oversensitive souls.
I'd be seeking legal advice, if only I could stop crying like a little baby for long enough.

It was just him being him bit ott calling for sack, clarkson making a joke.
Clarkson making shock comments to get publicity when there will be a Christmas book and DVD to sell.
His comments were not aimed at me but I wouldn't take it too personally if it was.

I think the BBC actually make money on Top Gear by selling it and franchising it around the globe (the US version is truly awful and can be found on some satellite channel or other over here).
The car show is great (sorry, was great, it's repetitious rubbish now), and in that environment (without the jokes about lazy Mexicans) he is fine. He makes cars (a rediculously boring subject to the vast majority who don't get a hard on at the thought of a supercharged V8 or an automatic torque biasing centre differential) moderately entertaining.
Unfortunately he then tries to do [iother things[/i. His books are the ramblings of the insane, collected from the walls inside toilet cubicles at Broadmoor. Anything else he does on television either involves insulting people to be "controvertial" or his obsession with the military. He's a school boy who's failed to grow out of an early teenage fatuation with WW2 as seen in Commando magazine. I suspect he has Airfix Tornado bombers hanging from fishing line in his bedroom (or study - where he writes all his masterpieces). There are 50 year olds out there who have a deep infatuation with the military (but obviously wouldn't go near the army themselves) . But usually they live with their parents and have 4ft high piles of "Gun Nutter" magazine and "Secrets of the Special Forces Killers" DVD's everywhere and they get picked up by the filth for flashing teenage girls or shooting presenters of Crimewatch.
I like him really.

I really must stop finding things offensive just because the media tells me to. I'm obviously much less clever than leicester_rhino and all his incredibly clever friends who "got" the joke.
Still, if you think it's ok that someone should make a joke about having striking workers shot and then in the next breath draw comparisons to wounded war veterans then good for you. I just wish I had the intelligence to agree with you, honest.
I guess I'll just have to settle for being patronised instead.

I can't think of anything better, more rational or intelligent than being outraged at Clarkson. Not his comments, just the fat, odious, curly haired oaf himself.
I am not outraged at him as I generally avoid watching or listening to anything featuring his bilious face or grating tones but if I feign some faux outrage at his crass and ill judged comments and it helps remove his offensive presence from my screen all together then what could be more rational, free thinking and intelligent than that.

If that was what I actually said then your wonderful sarcastic response would have been justified.
If you found it offensive then I can accept it, and I understand why you would find it offensive. I happen to think that what he said was tongue in cheek though not in good taste.
However, just like the Brand/Ross situation it has been blown out of proportion by the media, who seem to jump on these things with gusto. Many of the people complaining about it won't have seen the original, but will have only seen replays of it on the news, or gone looking for it on iPlayer, presumably with the intention of being offended.
If anything, the news are offending more people than the original comment by shoving it in everyone's faces at every opportunity. Its the media equivalent of a footballer rolling around on the floor trying to get a fellow professional sent off
