| Quote ="Gotcha"This Westerman hates Leeds is a load of 5h1te, simple as that.
He grew up as disliking them sure as many oppossition fans do now, but as with any professional rugby player once they play for a team they want to further their career as best they can. Westerman would give his right arm to sign for Leeds, as he would for Wigan or Saints also.
No player has ever signed for Leeds who disliked them as much as Lee Crooks did. Crooks didn't even make the choice to sign for Leeds, it was forced on him by his club, and Crooks knew it had to happen to help them. Once he realised there was no going back for him, Crooks was a great player for Leeds at times. Given the same opportunity again I am sure Leeds would have still made the same signing.'"
If Crooks is the best example you can come up with we should steer well clear
(I've never heard of Crooks held up as an example of a great signing before)
FWIW I think Westerman needs to leave Cas if he ever wants to live up to his early potential...
...I'm undecided whether that would make him a good signing for us though.

| If Westerman genuinely 'hates' Leeds then he's not yet a grown-up.
IIRC Crooks didn't hate Leeds, just never wanted to leave Hull. He did play some good games for us, and was going pretty well IIRC when he smashed his shoulder against Wigan. Never seemed as good for us after that. I used to have the video of the 88/89 Yorks Cup win against Cas - he was in pretty good form that day.

| Crooks had some good games for Leeds and some not so good games and that was reflected throughout the side so wasn't particularly player specific but (and there's always a but) he was quite outstanding at Hull (who he clearly loved to play for) and seemed to go pretty well at Castleford after he left Leeds. Therein lays the disappointment of his time at Headingley.
Also the fact that when he departed, Featherstone had tabled a higher offer (£50K higher) but Crooks had intimated that his preferred destination was Castleford. Leeds obligingly dealt with Wheldon Road and this at a time of Leedsline and Loiner's Guild fund raising initiatives where a percentage of the proceeds were made available for team strengthening or so the story goes.

Given the fee Leeds paid that statement is exactly why I'd never class Crooks as a successful signing (i.e. he never really performed to his full potential/ability while at Leeds but did before and after)

I remember clearly watching Crooks in the yorkshire cup tie against Hull at Headingley. We were losing at half time and Crooks was really poor, clearly not wanting to play against them, and got some stick. We won the game in the end and Crooks was absolutely immense in that second half.

| As a leeds player Crooks was, overall, a massive disappointment with a few good moments in between.
He never got near the standards he set at Hull (think of a young Sam Burgess who could goal kick and pass) and even though his time at Cas was better than at Leeds the ale had taken it's effects and he was never the same from the moment he left Hull. Shame really.

| I'd actually argue he was as good at Cas as he was at Hull, but in a slightly different style.
He was a more mature, physically developed player at Cas who was an out and out front-rower with excellent hands and a good offload game, rather than the running game he had in his younger days when he emerged as a back-rower at Hull.
Both versions however were superior to the disinterested lump he was for large parts of his time at Leeds...

I think the reference is to another Yorkshire Cup (1st round) game V Hull at Headingley, when Crooks eventually contributed a try and 6 goals in a comeback 28-24 win once he'd got over his reluctance to play. My other major recollection from that game was that it was Peter Tunks' Leeds debut (another try scorer that day) and that he was a big ba5tard after he walked off the cricket pitch during the pre game warm up.
It was the season before the Backo game and Backo moment that made his journey over worthwhile. Pure joy.

That was a great night and great days! SS full of fc fans! no bother! it was a cold night(i think)
I remember it been half way between the sticks and the touch line to right as you face the western terrace. perhaps slightly nearer the touch line.

I'm sure you're mixing up to different games against Hull. The Backo try with half of Hull hanging onto his back I recall winning a tight game. The comeback win featured Brooke-Cowden and Medley coming off the bench, and Deadly Medley scoring a hat-trick. He got man of the match for something like 30 minutes play, IIRC. Next week, Reilly picked Brooke-Cowden to start. He really, [ireally[/i didn't like Paul Medley.
All of this is from my aging memory, of course. I will happily bow to your superior knowledge if I'm wrong.

The Backo try was slam dunk under the sticks at the Eastern Terrace end of the ground. In addition there can be no confusion with any other try Backo may have scored for Leeds as ...... eh there weren't any.

Yes one of us is getting mixed up.
The game I think you are recalling was against Bradford Northern in the Yorkshire Cup 1st round at Headingley in the 1988/89 season. And here's why; Brooke-Cowden and Medley were the subs that day - Check. The following game Reilly picked Brooke-Cowden to start - Check. (Incidentally that following game was a 32-0 home win V St Helens with Slammin Sam making his Leeds debut.)
Nah then, Paul Medley only scored the one try hat-trick in his Headingley career and that was at home V Castleford (January 198icon_cool.gif in a game he started rather than coming off the bench. I think what secured his MOTM in the YC game V Bradford (from the bench) was he literally turned the game on it's head by scoring one long range try and making a huge break for another by Carl Gibson both down the left hand flank in front of the Southstand heading towards the Western Terrace.
