| It all started in Rhodes in 1979...
(screen goes all wavy...)
Theres me sat in a taverna and I saw my mates plate of moussaka and thought it was shepherds pie, so I ordered it, took a great big forkfull of aubergine base layer...
...and gipped it all back out again.
Jesus wept I've never tasted anything as foul then or since.
And their bread is usually stale too.

| Quote ="Mars Rhino"Surely that rules out the Olive tree? It is all of the above IMO.
Most of my suggestions would not be posh. Sous Les Nez used to be excellent, however I haven't been for a couple of years. Mal Maison's restaurant might be worth a bash, but I've not been there for a while either.
I don't like either Brasserie Blanc, or BiBis (sp?). They're both tosh, however Brasserie Blanc was nice and relaxed, and farely quiet, but the food was average for the price.'"
SLN is on the shortlist now.

Is that the place by the river near Woodhouse Grove (and about 2 minutes walk for you on a dinner time)?
If so I used to park by there a couple of times a week to go running - back when I was allowed to run (and in 38 weeks will be able to run again) and went in the pub once with John, Danny & Emma but only for a drink.

My friend's son is chef there, and her daughter is a waitress!

| La Grillade - Just off Wellington St. French place specialising in steaks but does a lot of other stuff. Totally unpretentious, very friendly staff, really convenient for the station, not too pricey and the food is divine (though not a great amount of choice for veggies).
Gare Girl swears by it (and being French they don't seem to mind).

You're not wrong.
Last time I looked the veggie mains were parmesan rissotto and pasta with a tomato ragu.
Not exactly imaginative when you look at what's available for meat and fish eaters.
Any non veggie can't go wrong.

| Last time I was with someone wanting veggie food in France, the waiter's response was along the lines "what do you want to do that for?". A completely alien concept.

| Sous Les Nez is still on decent form and does a pretty reasonable early bird. I recommended it to a colleague last week and him and his partner seemed to have a good evening judging by the way he turned up in the same clothes the next day...
The last time I went to France with a vegetarian it seemed to bring out the worst in my carnivore tendencies in that I really just couldn't stay away from steak tartare and cassoulet for the life of me. He appeared to enjoy the endless omelettes. Justice.

| I've only been to the Rodley Olive Tree once but didn't really rate it.
There's a nice Italian restaurant in Booths Yard, Pudsey called Diva Italia. It's quite a small place, nice staff and good food. The seafood starters are bang on. And I had the best rack of lamb there I've ever had (though if memory serves they've switched the menu up a little since then)

| Quote ="FoxyRhino"There's also an Olive Tree at Chapel Allerton (but unless you are in the north of the City, the one in Headingley will probably be closer).'"
Am a bit confused by all this
There is an Olive Tree in Rodley next to the roundabout and I know the one in Chapel A on Harrogate Road - but the Olive Tree in Headlingley?! Where is that?
Also, if you are in the north of the City, and you are in Headingley then surely you are still in the north of the city when you are in Chapel Allerton, considering it is about 3 miles away and further north!!!

The one in Headingley is just up from the New Inn near where Kendall Moores is (maybe even where Kendall Moores was?)

| I highly recommend Blackhouse in Leeds. It's where EST EST EST used to be, just up from the Metropole Hotel. The steaks are fantastic especially the chateaubriand. They have a good range of food that caters for most people. The atmosphere is relaxed but you know you have been somewhere special. Every evening from about 8 they have a guy playing the piano and singing with really adds to the evening. I have now been with the wife and friends many times and they never fail to deliver and the service is friendly and efficient. If the wallet stretches give the Kobi steak a try

| Seeing as though no-one is giving East Leeds a mention in this fine dining extravaganza, may I recommend my a little Italian in Austhorpe called Sorrento.
Small-ish but the food is to die for.Very reasonable too/
IT's opposite the Devon pub.
Through XGates and head up the ring road towards Colton.
(Just round the corner from the Skyliner Fish Shop of Chipshop Dave fame)

By North of the City, I was thinking about places like Moortown, Alwoodley etc.
