Like NSF, I'd heard something on the grapevine, but like I said to one of the current playing staff the other year about this site ... It's not what you read on here, it's also about what you don't read.

I met JH a little while ago for the first time at an official club function and my view of the great man hasn't changed. You couldn't meet a nicer, more modest guy with regards to his boundless footballing abilities.

One of the true greats of this club.

Totally agree - he is a very modest man and a true great. There are many players who think or have been elevated to greatness but in my opinion none of them are fit to lace his boots.

A Leeds legend. He's criminally underrated by other teams fans, who'd rather talk about petulant show-ponys like Murphy. But Holmes is as good as any half back this country has produced.

Very, Very modest man, Ive seen a lot of him over the last five years or so, he uses my local quite often and and old test match was on t.v, 76 world cup or something v. australia, few lads took the pi$$, he explained he couldn't have been picked as millward was stand off & he could not remember the game, 2 mins later who set up the winning try? he was centre. never reminises, never slags todays game either.
The members of the press actually apologized to him for giving george nicholls the LT trophy in 78, not bitter at all (could you imagine schofield!!)

Thats why he sent numerous others through gaps (often before being met with an elbow), Did wally lewis have pace? did sterling?, Murphy was an exeptional talent due to pace, holmes was exeptional due to guile and timing.

john holmes great player...kevin dick, john atkinson,les dyl,phil cookson,stevie pitchford, the list goes on ..etc etc ..some good old battles in those days for those who remember them...hope he gets well..

We must agree to differ - Murphy is head and shoulders above any British half I have ever seen - he did it at international level too - not sure you can say the same for Holmes.

Murphy had the pace to break line and create opportunities that way - a truly outstanding player
